Aurora alderman defeats Fee in tough race.
Democratic Aurora Alderman Stephanie Kifowit will take her seat in Springfield, winning her race against Republican Pat Fee Tuesday night. In unofficial totals, Kifowit received 16,544 votes to Fee's 9,648. The race to represent the 84th State House District was heated at times, with Kifowit — a Democrat, substitute teacher, Aurora alderman and Marine Corps veteran — accusing her Republican opponent of employing dirty tactics and going on the attack early on in the campaign. For her part, Fee, a homemaker and community volunteer, denied what she called "absurd" allegations, which accused her of allowing campaign staffers to harass Kifowit and her family in person and online. Fee, a former member of the Naperville Public Television Board …

A long-winded explanation for an even longer constitutional amendment is confusing some early voters, officials say, but the ballot measure boils down to a change in the way pension benefits can be increased.
Written by Shannon Antinori You might be in for a surprise when you head to the polls on Nov. 6 if you haven’t taken a look at a sample ballot (you can see one here by entering your address and clicking "view sample ballot") or perused the 2012 Voter Information Guide you got in the mail from the Will County Clerk’s office. Get news in your inbox. Sign up for the Patch newsletter. Like Naperville Patch on Facebook. So what’s on the ballot? The proposition seeks voter approval to amend the 1970 Illinois Constitution to require a three-fifths majority vote—rather than just a simple majority—before any governing body can approve a pension benefit increase. That goes for the Illinois General Assembly, local school districts, police or any unit…

A week before the election, poll shows less than a point difference between the 11th Congressional District rivals.
A new poll shows Democratic challenger Bill Foster leading incumbent Judy Biggert by less than 1 point in their battle to represent the new 11th District. Professional polling firm We Ask America released the results of an automated Oct. 28 poll showing former 14th District Congressman Foster leading the seven-term Republican 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent. According to the poll, which sampled more than 1,300 likely voters, the candidates were tied among women, while Foster had a slight — as in 2-point — lead among male voters. The race between Biggert and Foster has been a contentious one, with the two accusing each other of negative campaigning and Foster taking aim at Biggert over a controversial ad released by the National Republican …

Candidates spar during live event on WTTW.
It’s a question many voters have for candidates: Are you for or against gay marriage? On Wednesday night, Republican Congresswoman Judy Biggert and Democratic challenger Bill Foster took on the issue during their final debate as they battle to represent the new 11th Congressional District. The candidate forum aired live on WTTW-Channel 11’s “Chicago Tonight.” After Biggert made the ambiguous statement “I’m close to reaching for gay marriages,” Foster went on the offensive. “She has not yet evolved. So, she's crawling out of the swamp or something,” said Foster, a scientist, according to the Chicago Tribune. “She has not yet evolved. So, she's crawling out of the swamp or something,” he added, noting he supports marriage equality. Biggert …

The former New York mayor appeared at a fundraiser for Reps. Judy Biggert and Robert Dold Tuesday in Chicago.
A local Congressional candidate got a boost from a big name on Tuesday, according to the Chicago Tribune. The newspaper reported that former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani headlined a Chicago fundraiser for Republicans Judy Biggert, who hopes to win reelection in her new district, and Robert Dold of Kenilworth. Biggert, who has represented the 3rd District for seven terms, is running against Democrat Bill Foster to represent the new 11th District. Giuliani praised Biggert and Dold, saying they would work to create jobs and rein in federal spending, the Tribune reported. "They also happen to be Republicans who know how to work with Democrats and independents," Giuliani said at the Standard Club of Chicago. "Frankly, we need more of that …

Despite impassioned speeches about opening up the Illinois GOP, the Platform and Resolutions Committee voted against sending the return of direct elections for state committeemen to the floor. Read our live blog transcript for more details.
Update, 10 p.m., Friday, June 8, 2012 Illinois Republicans hoping to have more of a say in the state party's processes will have to wait another four years for another swing at it. While McLean County Republicans Chairman John Parrott rallied the packed room at the Platform and Resolutions Committee meeting Friday, during the Illinois State GOP Convention in Tinley Park, the votes fell short for direct elections of state committeemen and won't go to the full delegate floor Saturday. Those in favor of the election said it would energize the state's Republicans, bring them back into the process and eventually turn Illinois back to red. And those against said the money needed to campaign would only corrupt another process further, and other…
