What is so fascinating about the "Fifty Shades of Grey" trilogy?
Once the news broke that the Fifty Shades trilogy was being banned from libraries, I was hooked. I got in line to borrow a copy of the first book from a friend. In transit, the paperback made an unplanned detour to another friend. She knocked it out in three days before it finally got to me. The can’t-put-it-down story is addictive. I now understand why it’s being labeled “mommy porn.” It reminds me of an S&M remake of Pretty Woman—business arrangement and all. He’s rich, gorgeous and emotionally unavailable. She’s intelligent and naïve. So who cares how unlikely it is that he can make the 21-year-old virgin orgasm repeatedly with a riding crop. Who cares how unlikely it is to find a 21-year-old virgin. The space needs committee will make its recommendation and the township board will present its case for a new building before residents vote.
Wheatland Township residents exercising rarely used laws to wrest decision-making power from elected officials -- which could culminate in a vote on a new town hall Tuesday -- is getting to be big news. Township space study committee member Deb Holscher said she's been told the Wall Street Journal may send its Chicago bureau reporter to Plainfield East High School to cover the 7 p.m. meeting. The meeting's also getting big play on the Illinois Republican News Watch Web site, which has posted the article, “A must-attend meeting for Wheatland Township taxpayers.” It describes the gathering as “a historic opportunity to have (taxpayers') voices heard.” Officials are expecting a big crowd, which is why the meeting's being held at the high …

Mike/Bill, Just so everyone knows, the school district is not a part of any political proceedings. The school buildings are available to be rented for activities and are often used for chruch gatherings and other options. As long as a group meets the criteria and availability, they can rent the facility. No one in the school district or Village of Plainfield is a part of any meeting as a …   more ›
This "idiot wife" doesn't mind the title.
Once a reader described me as an “idiot wife” and Pat as a “workaholic husband” in response to a story I wrote about juggling the activities of our four kids. I was an idiot for having my kids in so many activities and surely my husband must be a workaholic to pay for them all. Our four boys are busy. Usually they are in a sport of some kind and sometimes they have another activity on top of it. For instance, my oldest took Japanese lessons from a neighbor and at the College of DuPage. Pat and I place a high value on helping the boys to uncover their passions and talents, even though it does mean shelling out funds to pay for those activities and driving all over the place to get them there. We feel so strongly about our belief that the …

Problem I had with Amy Chua's method, I was raised similarly. It didn't make happy children. We were all perfectly behaved, high achieving professionals, and miserable from being controlled. I noticed the kids that were a little more out of control in my high school were actually healthier as humans. I agree Americans value academic achievement lower than they should, I saw that when my kids were…   more ›
