North Central Cardinals Clean Up in Barcelona

The Cardinals played an exhibition game in Barcelona, Spain on Sunday.

Submitted by North Central College The North Central College football team was able to post an exhibition victory on its trip to Spain Sunday, defeating the Spanish national team, 36-3, in the Barcelona Classic at the Estadi Municipal D'athletisme Joan Serrahima in Montjuic Park. Playing a team comprised of 50 players from clubs throughout Spain, the Cardinals rolled to a large early lead and kept their counterparts out of the end zone to post a win in Europe for the third straight time. North Central also visited Italy in 2006 and Switzerland in 2009. The Cardinals scored on their first drive of the game, as Nick Kukuc ran around the left end for the game's initial touchdown. North Central's Winder Named Assistant Coach of the Year

Tim Winder is in his 19th year coaching pole vaulters at the college.

From North Central College North Central College assistant men's and women's track and field coach Tim Winder has been honored by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCC) as its 2012 NCAA Division III National Men's Assistant Coach of the Year. Winder, in his 19th year as the coach of North Central's pole vaulters, qualified five men to the Division III Outdoor Championships in the pole vault. Cardinals wound up claiming the top three spots at the championships, as junior Peter Geraghtycleared a meet-record height of 17 feet, 8 1/2 inches to win his second straight outdoor national championship. NCC Roundup: Track Teams Post Season Bests

Both the men's and women's track team had stellar performances over the weekend.

Submitted by North Central College Men’s Track Fresh off a stellar performance in last week's College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin Outdoor Championships, the North Central College men's track and field team continued to step up its efforts on Thursday and Friday, winning three events and posting a series of season-best performances in the Dr. Keeler Invitational at Jay and Dot Buikema Track. The fourth-ranked Cardinals displayed its mastery of the pole vault once again, sweeping the top four spots. Josh Winder, Peter Geraghty and John Wood placed first, second and third, respectively, each clearing 16 feet, 7 1/4 inches, while Frank Wleklinski placed fourth with a career-best clearance of 16'1 1/4". North Central College: Golf and Lacrosse Highlights

A round up of how the men's and women's golf team and women's lacrosse team did over the weekend.

Submitted by North Central College Taking advantage of ideal playing conditions to post some of its best numbers of the spring, the North Central College men's golf team turned in an 11th-place finish in the 22-team Augustana College Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Pinnacle Country Club. After turning in a score of 327 in Friday's opening round, the Cardinals were one of many teams going low on Saturday, totaling a 313 for their best round of the spring and their third-best effort of the academic year. North Central's total of 640 placed it ahead of Augustana, as well as fellow College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) rival Elmhurst College. North Central Opens NCAA Tourney in St. Louis

The Cardinals (20-7) won the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament Championship on Saturday, securing a bid to the Division III Championship.

Submitted by North Central College The North Central College men's basketball team will open play in the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship on Friday at Washington University in St. Louis, taking on Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology (Ind.) in the first round. The Cardinals (20-7) won the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Tournament Championship on Saturday, defeating 22nd-ranked Wheaton College, 75-58, in the final. The win secured the CCIW's automatic bid to the Division III Championship for North Central, which will be making its first appearance in the national tournament since 2006 and its sixth appearance overall. Book Offers Teen Athletes Advice on Achieving Excellence from the Inside Out

Naperville resident Kirk Mango's book, Becoming a True Champion, which will be released in May is geared toward teen athletes, helping them make decisions that will empower them to achieve with integrity.

For years Kirk Mango has worked dilgently toward one goal, writing a book. Writing that book and taking every step possible to see that it would be published required him to stay focused and not give up. Dedication and determination aren’t new to Mango, 54, a two-time college All-American gymnast. At the heart of his book, Becoming a True Champion, Achieving Athletic Excellence From the Inside Out, which will be published in May, are the lessons and life-skills he learned as an athlete, coach and parent. Now he hopes to share what he has learned with young athletes. Mango, a Naperville resident and physical education teacher for more than 30 years at Downers Grove South High School, said he became concerned about what he was hearing from …

Benet Downs Huskies to Win Holiday Tournament

Redwings extend winning streak to eight while snapping Huskies' streak at six.

Nicole Valentine is not the biggest basketball player around, but she stood tall at both ends of the court for Benet on Friday night. Valentine, a 5-8 senior guard, was a force inside and outside, scoring 16 points and pulling down nine rebounds to help the host Redwings knock off Naperville North 76-60 in the championship game of the Benet/Naperville North Holiday Tournament in Lisle. The victory was the eighth straight for Benet (12-4), which snapped Naperville North’s six-game winning streak. “We knew that defense and rebounds would win the game,” Valentine said. “That’s usually our motto. Season ends short of national championship, individual honors still alive

Reminiscent of its only other loss of the season, the North Central College football team saw a second-half lead evaporate and its tenure in the NCAA Division III Football Championship come to a close, as the Cardinals lost a 29-28 heartbreaker to the undefeated Wabash College Little Giants on Nov. 26 at Hollett Little Giant Stadium. The Cardinals (10-2) owned a 21-0 advantage at halftime and held a 28-7 lead in the third period, but a prolific passing effort fueled a furious comeback for Wabash, which scored 22 fourth-quarter points. "Wabash played a terrific game," Cardinals coach John Thorne. "We wish them a lot of luck as they move forward in the playoffs." Metea Valley Loses to Bartlett

Bartlett enjoyed a victory on its homecoming night.

The Bartlett Hawks fans received a homecoming spectacular as they shut out the Metea  Valley Mustangs 42-0.  Bartlett scored three times in the first quarter and never looked back. The Hawks (5-2, 4-0) look to clinch a playoff berth on Friday with a win at Nequa Valley.  Metea (3-4, 1-4) will look to even their record as they host Lake Park. Submitted by Laurence Pearlman
