Letter to the Editor: WDSRA Provides Opportunity for Special Needs Adults, Children

Naperville Patch welcomes letters to the editor. Letters may be submitted to Local Editor Collin Czarnecki at collin.czarnecki@patch.com.

At this time of year, our thoughts turn to family, friends, holiday celebrations, and giving to others. I am the parent of a 20-year old daughter, Kelsey who has Down Syndrome. As most parents, I want to provide the best for her. WDSRA serves more than 4500 adults and children with special needs in more than 1500 recreation programs, trips and special …

District 204 Prepares Students for Next STEPS

Through its STEPS program, the district helps prepare special education students for life after school.

The transition to adulthood can be an exciting, yet scary experience for young adults and their parents. For students with special needs the transition may be even more nerve-racking. Just as any teen longs for independence, students with special needs are no different. Though some students may be more limited than others, Indian Prairie School District 204 does its best to offer special needs students the tools needed to be productive, happy members of the community. “Parents of students with disabilities are very anxious about sending them into transition,” said Diane Fleischel, District 204’s director of student services. “We want to move them out and into the community.” Through its STEPS program (Supported Training Experiences Post …
