Marathon Bombing Sends Shockwaves Across Country

Across Patch's network of 900 sites, people felt the effect of the bombing at the Boston Marathon.

On mobile? You can see a scrollable, full-screen view of the map here. Monday's terror attack near the finish line of the Boston Marathon shocked the country and touched communities far from Massachusetts. The Boston Marathon is a national and international event, drawing participants and spectators from far away. When the bombs went off, they reverberated among families, friends and people who joined vigils honoring the victims. To illustrate the reach of this story, we've created this interactive map which displays every Patch site that wrote a story about local people touched by the attack. Each marker on the map is clickable and includes the name of the local person connected to the story and a link to their story. The 400+ markers on …

What Did You Think of the Drew Peterson Lifetime Movie?

Lifetime debuted "Drew Peterson: Untouchable" last night. What did you think?

Now's not the time to awkwardly deny you watch Lifetime movies, not when the channel's most recent flick was about Bolingbrook's own, Drew Peterson. Lifetime debuted "Drew Peterson: Untouchable" last night. The film stars Rob Lowe as Peterson, the disgraced ex-Bolingbrook cop who is accused of killing his third wife, Kathleen Savio, in March 2004. The movie has been in the works for nearly a year and is based off of Shorewood Patch Editor Joseph Hosey's book Fatal Vows: The Tragic Wives of Drew Peterson. Patch movie critic Dave Wilson said the movie "remains true to the real-life saga, which is a relief." He goes on: After all, you can’t get much weirder than what we can only imagine really happened to Drew’s third and fourth wives. Rob …

It's 'Be Nice on the Internet' Week — Are You In?

Real Simple magazine has started an online campaign against rudeness on the Web. What do you think?

While the Internet has made our lives easier in countless ways, given the public more access to information than ever before and provided endless hours of entertainment, it also has a dark side. I’m not talking about online predators lurking, waiting for their next victims. I’m not even talking about cyberbullying — well, not really. I’m talking about the negativity that can bombard us as we’re surfing the Web; from nasty comments on news stories to critical Facebook posts to mean-spirited memes, it sometimes seems like it’s everywhere. The good news is that Real Simple magazine has declared this week Be Nice on the Internet Week. Maybe it sounds a little silly, but I’m on board with the magazine's “down with rudeness on the Web” campaign…

Help An Illinois School District Win $100,000

Your vote could help make a world of difference for students in Bolingbrook's Valley View School District.

It was Benjamin Franklin who once said, "If we do not hang together, we shall surely hang separately." I know you're not from Bolingbrook, but Bolingbrook sure needs your help.  The Frohns, longtime residents of Bolingbrook, are among 24 national finalists for Patch's Deck the House contest.  What's at stake? A lot, actually. If the Frohns receive the most votes by Sunday, Jan. 8, the Valley View School District will get $100,000 for local students. Now we know your kids don't attend any of Valley View's schools. But the Frohns are the only Illinois candidate. And during these cash-strapped times we live in, anyone can realize the enormous effect $100,000 can have on a child's education. Please take a moment to vote for the Frohns and help…

Rob Lowe on Playing Drew Peterson: 'Why Do You Want Me?'

Rob Lowe appears on ABC's Good Morning America and talks about his upcoming Lifetime movie based on the Drew Peterson story.

When approached about playing Drew Peterson, the former Bolingbrook Police Department officer who is now accused of killing one of his wives, Rob Lowe had the same reaction most of us had: why me? Lowe appeared on ABC's Good Morning America on Wednesday and spoke to Robin Roberts about the Peterson role. "I quickly said why do you want me," Lowe said, when asked how he reacted about being offered the gig. "I felt like I was the last person that made sense to play Drew, which is exactly why I ended up saying yes, because I knew it would be such a departure for me." To view the entire interview, which also includes a few more scenes from "Untouchable", CLICK HERE. The movie has been in the works for nearly a year and will air on Lifetime on …

Boys Basketball: Buzzer Beater Lifts Neuqua Valley to Win Over Bolingbrook

The Wildcats’ Pat Kenny nailed a hook shot as time expired to defeat the Raiders 50-48.

Wednesday’s game between Bolingbrook and Neuqua Valley came down to a last second shot by Neuqua senior guard Tyler Sutton, who initially missed the game-winning 3-pointer as time was running out. The Raiders, though, failed to box out Neuqua junior center Pat Kenny, who grabbed the air ball and swished a hook shot along the left baseline at the buzzer and handed Bolingbrook a 50-48 road loss. “We ran a good play at the end there,” Kenny said. “Tyler got a great look. He missed it, which happens, but I got the offensive rebound and luckily got it in.” Bolingbrook (5-3, 3-0 Southwest Suburban) trailed 44-34 entering the fourth quarter. Head coach Rob Brost decided to go back to the press in order to force some turnovers. The strategy paid …
