A sure sign of summer is the sight of a colorful kite flying in the breeze against a blue sky. What better place in which to fly a kite than Naperville’s Frontier Sports Complex? With plenty of open space and steady winds, Frontier Sports Complex will host the Naperville Park District’s 7th annual Kite Fly Festival on Sunday, June 2 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This free, family-friendly event is presented by BMO Harris. Naperville Park District Youth Ambassadors will host the 2013 Battle of the Bands this Friday, May 17.
The Naperville Park District Youth Ambassadors will host the 2013 Battle of the Bands, a free event featuring nine of the community’s top high school student rock bands, representing all five area high schools. The public is invited to hear the variety of music created by local students and cheer on their favorite bands. Naperville Park District announces dates and information for downtown summer attractions.
Last week, Naperville's Centennial Beach was being filled with water, but not in the way park district officials had planned. Watch: DuPage River Waterfall Flows into Centennial Beach Due to heavy storms, water from the DuPage River flooded across the beach's neighboring Riverwalk and cascaded into the empty quarry, creating a rushing waterfall of river water. As flood waters subside and the river continues to recede, Naperville Park District officials are now busy cleaning and refilling Centennial Beach in preparation for the 2013 beach season. Naperville Park District crowned this year's dodgeball champions during a tournament on Feb. 24.
This year's tournament, sponsored by the Naperville Park District Youth Ambassadors, took place on Feb. 24. Eleven teams competed, with Loiter Squad defeating DiFranco four games to three in a best-of-seven final match. The Youth Ambassadors is a group of high school students who work with the Naperville Park District to plan community-wide special events for teens.

Coyote mating season is approaching and sightings may become even more common throughout the next few months.
Pet owners may want to keep a closer eye on the family dog in the coming months as coyote sightings in Naperville may become even more common. Earlier: Coyotes Spotted in Naperville: Where You've Seen Them February through April is the typical period for coyote mating and nearby Wheaton recently issued a warning to residents to take precautions. "Coyotes are opportunistic and will go for easy prey, such as an unattended pet," according to a release from the city of Wheaton. Like dogs, coyotes will also test their limits around people and they learn something new from every encounter, according to the Naperville Park District. Have an old pair of sneakers laying around? The Naperville Park District is partnering with Players Indoor Sports Center and SCARCE (School and Community Assistance for Recycling and Composting Education) to host a community gym shoe collection this winter. “This is a green initiative, with the intent to provide a convenient location for families and individuals participating in our indoor athletic programs to drop off gym shoes that are outgrown, worn out, or no longer needed,” said Sue Omanson, community development manager and member of the Naperville Park District’s Green Team in a release. Hailed as the village's "crown jewel," the Riverwalk was created in 1981 as a permanent commemorative to honor Naperville's 150th anniversary.
