Illinois gas prices could rise 10 cents a gallon by this time next week due to Tropical Storm Isaac, according to CNN Money. Officials from AAA have said that Tropical Storm Issac, which is currently ripping across the Gulf of Mexico, will shut down offshore oil rigs causing a spike in gas prices. The National Hurricane Center has predicted that the tropical storm will become a hurricane on Tuesday with 74 to 95 mph winds. It is expected to hit from an area southwest of New Orleans to the edge of Florida's panhandle. The cheapest unleaded gas available in Naperville as of Monday afternoon is $3.96 per gallon at Speedway, 1712 W. Ogden Ave., which means gas could reach as high as $4.06 by Sept. 3. Naperville gas stations are charging more than $4 per gallon for gas.
AAA Chicago is saying that refinery problems in Illinois and Indiana are behind gas price increases that took the cost to more than $4 a gallon in the Chicago area, according to the State Journal Register. According to IllinoisGasPrices.com, only three stations in Naperville have gas priced below $4 per gallon. The cheapest gas you’ll find is $3.79 at Sam's Club, 808 S. Route 59. Prices are steep at other local stations, costing $4.15 per gallon at Thornton's, Delta Sonic, Speedway and Mobil and $4.19 at Shell. Nationwide, gas prices have risen from an average of 3.32 per gallon of regular to $3.53 per gallon of regular in the last month, according to AAA. The average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has dropped in recent weeks as many motorists prepare for travel during the long holiday weekend.
As motorists prepare to fuel up and hit the open road this weekend they may feel a little less of a squeeze on their wallet at the pump. According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in the United States is $3.383, down 18 cents from a year ago. Prices are even lower from a month ago by 26 cents. And while the average price in Illinois is currently higher at $3.55 a gallon, prices in Naperville are lower than that number. Local stations like Mobil, 1598 W. Ogden Ave. are charging $3.39 per gallon and a handful of others are charging $3.40. Here's a list of local gas stations with the cheapest prices in Naperville.
