Sabre Girls Hockey Team Ready To Take State

The Sabre Girls U12 hockey team will compete Friday night for the state title in the Northern Illinois Hockey League.

Editor's Note: We are refeaturing this story because the girls have taken state and will now go on to national competition. BOLINGBROOK—Walking into the locker room at the Rocket Ice Arena, the atmosphere is raucous and full of energy. The smell is also a little bit … pungent. With pads and skates on, it is go time. Readying for practice, it’s clear the teammates are having fun because there is so much laughter and camaraderie. While they are as tough as any hockey player taking to the ice, the girls on the Sabre Girls U12 hockey team also are like sisters. And, giggling may ensue at any moment. Girls hockey still is not as visible as some other sports, but the Sabre teammates said they would never think of trading their pads to don frilly…

Arhontas Puts Skills on Ice at Princeton

He learned to skate in Naperville and found his passion. Now he combines hockey and academics in the Ivy League.

When Matt Arhontas went looking for the right combination of academics and athletics, there was only one place in the country that he believed could offer the prefect fit.  Four years later, both Arhontas and the Princeton University campus couldn’t be happier. Arhontas is completing his senior season at the Ivy League school and has emerged as one of the top players for the men’s hockey team. The Naperville native arrived on the New Jersey campus at a time when the hockey program was turning into an NCAA title contender.
