PHOTOS: Vintage Baseball at Naper Settlement

Residents stepped back in time on Sunday to witness a vintage baseball exhibition between the Chicago Salmon and the DuPage County Plowboys at Naper Settlement.

Long before the mega stadiums (and even larger player salaries) of today, in the 1850s the game of baseball was played in its simplest form - with bare knuckles and few rules. Naperville residents got a chance to relive that experience on Sunday when Naper Settlement put on a vintage baseball exhibition between the Chicago Salmon and the DuPage County Plowboys. Players from both teams played with no mitts and a lone umpire made the call, reminiscent of how the game was played more than 150 years ago.

148 Years Later, Chapel Still Home to Celebration of Life, Love

Naper Settlement Century Memorial Chapel had a unique and uncertain journey in Naperville's history book.

Naperville's history can be seen in buildings throughout the city and downtown area, but one building in particular continues to write new stories and stand the test of time. What is now known as Century Memorial Chapel was built in Naperville in 1864 and has a history of overcoming uncertainty, including during its construction toward the end of the Civil War. “The country was in turmoil and this congregation built this church in the face of adversity,” said Naper Settlement marketing representative Donna DeFalco. “And that’s what I think is so special about this church.” That wasn’t the first time the chapel would face difficulties. Before it became the first building to be moved into Naper Settlement, the church had to be moved across …

Restored Naperville Central Mural Unveils Glimpse into Past

Once forgotten painting depicting Naperville's past now hangs proudly inside Alumni Room of Naperville Central High School.

Tucked away inside the walls of the newly-renovated Naperville Central High School lies a snapshot of the school's and city's past.  A historic mural - which once was largely forgotten in the basement of the school - now hangs proudly restored in the Alumni Room of the school's activities office. And Naperville Central activities director Lynne Nolan has a hunch the painting could be linked to a prominent Naperville artist.   The painting is roughly 10 by 6 feet and is believed to have been painted by local artist Les Schrader. Schrader was a self-taught artist and third generation Napervillian who is best known for preserving the city's past through his paintings, according to Naper Settlement curator of research Bryan Ogg. The artist …

PHOTOS: Sneak Peak of Historic Naperville Bank & Trust Building

Historic downtown Naperville 1939 Post Office on Washington Street was recently rehabbed and will be open to the public as a Naperville Bank & Trust branch on Monday, April 23.

After a year of rehab and renovation, the historic 1939 Post Office in downtown Naperville has been transformed into Naperville Bank & Trust.  The bank opens to the public on Monday and blends old and new interior elements; maintaining much of the original Art Deco design. Snapshots of Naperville's past are also proudly displayed throughout the building.  Some key focal points in the building and bank lobby are original pieces from the Post Office. The main desk and original windows have been refurbished and a 1939 Post Office mural hangs above the teller windows.  "We tried to incorporate as much of the past as we could and maintain its integrity," said Charles Vincent George Group architect Bruce George. "It's a great feeling to come be …
