NTSB Takes Over Plane Crash Investigation

The investigation into an October plane crash is now being headed by another national agency. Officials said in mid-October that the investigation would take one more month to complete.

The investigation of an Oct. 6 plane crash at XSport Fitness in Naperville is still under way, but it's now being coordinated by the National Transportation Safety Board rather than the Federal Aviation Administration. In mid-October, officials said the investigation would last another month. But the case has since been transferred to the NTSB, said Tony Molinaro, FAA spokesman for the Great Lakes Regional Office in Des Plaines. "It's their call on that," he said. "If they take an investigation, we still gather everything but we give it to them. They are now the only ones who can talk about it." The NTSB's preliminary report is available on its website, but no new information is included. The summary states what was already known — that on…

One More Month in Plane Crash Investigation

The investigation of a plane crash last week in Naperville is expected to take at least another month to complete.

Answers to why a plane crashed into a Naperville fitness center last week will not be available for at least another month, said a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration. "Until then, we don't discuss anything about investigation," said Tony Molinaro, FAA spokesman for the Great Lakes Regional Office in Des Plaines. Molinaro was referring Wednesday to the Oct. 6 plane crash into XSport Fitness, 2780 Fitness Dr., near the intersection of 75th Street and Route 59. Piloting the plane was Lloyd McKee, 66, and beside him was his wife, Maureen McKee, 63. Both survived the crash. "The reason some of these investigations take a little while is because they are working on many cases at the same time," Molinaro said. "The inspectors …

Friends Say Naperville Crash Pilot Has Wealth of Experience

A local couple remains in serious condition at Edward Hospital after Wednesday's plane crash into a Naperville fitness center.

Neighbors of a Naperville couple who survived Wednesday afternoon's plane crash refer to the man who was flying as a "safety- conscious, seasoned pilot" who "flies by the book." "He is definitely not a new pilot. He is very accomplished," Eva Maule said Thursday. Maule lives in Aero Estates, next door to 66-year-old Lloyd McKee, who piloted the plane. McKee was flying a private plane around noon Wednesday with his wife, Maureen McKee, 63, when it crashed into the XSport Fitness, 2780 Fitness Dr., near the intersection of 75th Street and Route 59. The couple, who were pinned inside the plane after the crash but speaking to rescue workers, remained at Edward Hospital in Naperville. They are being treated for injuries that officials said were…

We do know how to check facts Chuck and I actually pride myself on it. But we're also human and can admit when we're wrong. In this case, you are right. The plane was actually a Piper PA-32R-300. When the FAA has an ongoing investigation, they often refuse to comment on anything, forcing us to rely on sources like the association's registry. I regret the error. Thank you very much for reading and…   more ›

No Deaths in Naperville Plane Crash

Two passengers survived a plane crash Wednesday afternoon at a Naperville fitness club.

No one died after a plane crashed into the Xsport Fitness around noon today while taking off from a nearby subdivision. Lloyd McKee, 66, and Maureen McKee, 63, of Aero Estates — a local subdivision which includes a small residential airport — took off shortly before noon in their private airplane and were heading to Pittsburgh, Penn., said Naperville Police Commander Mike Anders at the scene. Emergency personnel received the 911 call at 12:04 p.m., they said. The husband and wife were speaking to first responders after the crash, officials said, and both were taken to Edward Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. As the crash occurred, people working out in the fitness center were asked to evacuate. No one inside was …
