Thate becomes second straight DGS runner to garner award.
A note from the editors at Patch: By the voting deadline for this week's Athlete of the Week (9 p.m. Oct. 26), Amanda Thate of Downers Grove South had 44 percent of the votes, making her the clear winner. Freshman Amanda Thate has been Downers Grove South's No. 1 cross country runner in every meet this season except for the WSC Gold conference championship two weeks ago. The only thing holding her back from another top finish was a turned ankle, which caused her to slow down. Her postseason took a turn for the better at the Lyons Regional, where she finished third overall in 17 minutes, 56 seconds to help her team advance to the Lockport Sectional this weekend. "Amanda has had an amazing freshman season so far," Mustangs coach Doug …

The Neuqua Valley boys golf team turned back fellow local boys golf power Benet for third place at the 29-team Fenton Invitational on Saturday morning in Bensenville.
Ian Nebendahl had a dream start at the 43rd Fenton Invitational on Saturday morning in Bensenville. The Neuqua Valley fifth man began his round of the 29-team boys golf tournament at White Pines Golf Club with a par. But then his outward nine really became interesting. “I came out pretty fast out of the gate,” Nebendahl said. Nebendahl had three consecutive birdies and rode his sizzling start to lead the Wildcats to third place in the team standings with his low round of 4-over-par 74. Neuqua Valley and Benet were tied for third place with team scores of 310, but Nick Roaches’ 79 proved to be the tiebreaker for the Wildcats. The Nebendahl start was indicative of a team-wide opening nine holes for the Wildcats on the par-70 layout. “We were…

Downers Grove South 3, Naperville Central 1. The Mustangs capture their first regional title since 2007 behind the pitching of Matt Wivinis.
HINSDALE – Downers Grove South baseball coach Darren Orel has been in charge of the program for four years, but a regional title has escaped the Mustangs. Saturday, however, the Mustangs were able to capture that elusive title. Downers South edged defending Class 4A state champion Naperville Central, 3-1, to win the Class 4A Hinsdale Central Regional title and advance to next week’s Class 4A Neuqua Valley Sectional. “This is a big thing for our program,” Orel said. “This group finally got us over the hump a little bit. This group has been around a little bit and they’ve been close and they finally got over the hump. This is huge for this program in terms of down the line and doing these kinds of things a little more consistently.” Downers …

Downers Grove South 8, Naperville Central 2. The Mustangs score five runs in the first and coast to the non-conference win Thursday.
NAPERVILLE – Both Downers Grove South and Naperville Central knew that Thursday’s non-conference softball game would be a good barometer to see where each team was at early in the season. It was Downers South that left with a good feeling. The Mustangs jumped on Central starter Kristina Vizza, scoring five runs in the first and chasing her from the game before cruising to an 8-2 win. Both teams had just lost one-run games to state power Lockport in the past week, so the Mustangs were certainly satisfied to bounce back against the Redhawks. “We’re starting to play better,” DGS coach Ron Havelka said. “It was a nice confidence builder for our team. I was really proud of how we played defense. We were really into the game. The kids played …

Sports Writer Paul Johnson ranks the top five teams in the region, plus a short list of the next best teams.
1. Benet Academy (27-0): Benet is the talk of the nation after taking down the state’s No. 1 team, Simeon on Saturday. The Redwings soared to No. 6 in the USA Today poll and No. 1 in the Midwest. They’ll take their perfect record into the postseason next week at the Naperville North Regional. 2. Downers Grove South (23-3): The Mustangs quietly will ride into the postseason in Benet’s shadow, not having lost a game since Dec. 18. They’ll ride a 16-game win streak into the West Aurora Regional next week. 3. East Aurora (20-5): The Tomcats have won five straight after a three-game hiccup and still have a non-conference tune-up with Batavia Friday before starting their postseason journey. East Aurora headlines the Bolingbrook Regional next …

Sports writer Paul Johnson ranks the region's top five boys basketball teams, plus a list of five knocking on the door.
1. Benet Academy (25-0): The game Illinois basketball fans have awaited for all season is finally here, the Redwings’ showdown with No. 1 Simeon Saturday at the UIC Pavilion. Simeon was knocking on the door of a No. 1 national ranking, but was knocked off by Whitney Young this week. Could a Benet win make it the state’s No. 1 team? 2. Downers Grove South (21-3): A 10-day layoff didn’t slow down the Mustangs against Leyden. Friday features a chance for DGS to wrap up the West Suburban Gold as the Mustangs host a tough Proviso East team. DGS beat the Pirates by 12 in January. 3. East Aurora (17-5): The Tomcats rebounded from three straight losses with three straight wins, including Neuqua Valley and cross-town rival West Aurora. They …
