DuPage River water begins to recede as city officials reopen bridges in downtown Naperville Friday.
Update: 2:28 p.m. The Eagle Street bridge in downtown Naperville has reopened, according to the city. All bridges in the downtown area have now reopened after being closed as a result of high flood waters. Update: 1:07 p.m. The city has reopened Washington Street, Main Street and Jefferson Avenue bridges in downtown Naperville. The Eagle Street bridge remains closed at this time, according to the city. An area of standing water remains on Jefferson Avenue west of the Jefferson Avenue bridge, causing vehicles to travel single file through that area. Two incumbents and three newcomers won the five open seats on the Indian Prairie School District 204 board Tuesday night, according to unofficial tallies. Cathy Piehl and Benjamin White won re-election while Michael Raczak and Maria Curry will join the school board for the first time in the spring to serve 4-year terms. Naperville high school recognized as top school for music education.
Neuqua Valley High School has been named the 2013 National Signature School by the Grammy Foundation. The foundation recognizes top U.S. public high schools making an "outstanding commitment to music education." In 2005, Neuqua Valley was also named the top school for music education, according to a press release. Neuqua Valley will be presented with a check for $10,000 as well as its very own Grammy statue. Two other Indian Prairie School District 204 schools, Metea Valley and Waubonsie Valley High School, were selected as semi-finalists. Heavy snow could make for messy commute Tuesday evening.
Update: 6:18 p.m. March, 5 Naperville Department of Public Works crews are working hard this evening clearing streets of snow and slush throughout Naperville. A winter storm warning remains in effect for Naperville until midnight when snow begins to taper off, according to the National Weather Service. Total snow accumulation of 10 to 12 inches is possible. As of 6 p.m., the Naperville area had a total of about 7 inches of snow on the ground. Winds will pick up to 15 to 25 mph, which could result in drifting snow in open areas, according to the NWS. Update: Feb. 26, 1:57 p.m. With a winter weather advisory calling for 3 to 6 inches of snow for the Naperville area, local school officials announced a few changes to after-school schedules Tuesday. Snow, Rain, Sleet Could Make for Messy Tuesday Evening Commute Both Naperville School District 203 and Indian Prairie School District 204 have canceled all after-school activities Tuesday due to winter weather. Two Naperville schools were recently awarded National Blue Ribbons based on overall academic excellence.
U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently announced two Indian Prairie School District 204 schools as National Blue Ribbon winners, according to a District 204 press release. Fry Elementary School and White Eagle Elementary School, were selected as exemplary, high performing Blue Ribbon Schools along with 267 schools across the country. Schools were selected based on their overall academic excellence or for making progress in improving student academic achievement levels. Kent Duncan is the new chairman of the board at the Indian Prairie Education Foundation. Duncan replaces Alan Fry who stepped down after 24 years of service to the nonprofit educational foundation.
With the education environment changing, so is the role of the Indian Prairie Educational Foundation. The foundation, which was founded in 1988, isn’t changing its strategy, but it is adding to its focus areas. Since the foundation’s inception 24 year ago, Alan Fry was chairman of the organization until his recent retirement. Now, Kent Duncan has taken over the task of chairing the foundation, which is an all-volunteer organization. “The foundation wants to see how it can be of help to the district moving forward. We will still support the arts, science and math, three things the foundation has been supportive of over last 24 years,” Duncan said. “Those pieces aren’t going away. The Indian Prairie School District 204 Board of Education will vote on its 2013 preliminary $288 million budget in August.
The Indian Prairie School District 204 Board of Education had its first look at the district's proposed 2013 budget at its meeting Monday night. According to the district’s Assistant Superintendant of Business, Dave Holm, everything appears to be on target. Holm sat through his final board meeting before he retires. “If everything comes in as we anticipate it, we look pretty good for the current budget year,” he said. “We look good, if not even better.” When it comes to the district’s $288 million budget, it will need to wait to hear what the final outcome is with the state’s budget. The Illinois legislature passed a budget at the last minute, but Gov. Pat Quinn has yet to sign off on it, Holm said. It’s unknown if Quinn will ask for …

All five scholarship recipients are graduating seniors from the Naperville area resided within either Naperville School District 203 or Indian Prairie School District 204. Scholarship winners are: This was the first year the NJWC awarded scholarships to Metea Valley students, as it is the school’s first graduating class. Scholarships are awarded based on financial need, community service, school involvement, and scholastic achievement and are awarded annually by the NJWC. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed 23-month-old Jada Akyela, of Oswego, died Sunday night.
An Oswego toddler who was seriously injured in an accident with a bus last week has died, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed Monday morning. Jada Akyea, 23 months old, was being treated for her injuries at Loyola Medical Center, but died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The body had not yet been released because the child was an organ donor, the Medical Examiner’s Office said. Officials at Loyola Hospital would not comment. The child was flown to Loyola Medical Center on April 23 after the van she was riding in was involved in a collision with an Indian Prairie School District 204 bus. I observed a full D203 bus stalled in at least 3 feet of water this morning around 7:30 with a NPD officer helping unload the kids into the standing water. What forced the decision to make school "optional" at 8:10 this morning, 5 minutes before the school day starts? Very poor decision making Supt.
