A Father's Love Sometimes Goes Without Saying

On Father's Day this writer is thankful for the relationship she has with her father.

When I was growing up my dad wasn’t around a lot. Maybe you can relate. Whenever there was a concert performance or a parade to attend, it was always my mom who was there to watch me. Then, in 2004 my mom died. My dad was left feeling pretty lost. So was I. At the time I was living in Durango, Colo. I spent another two years in Colorado before moving home to Illinois.  People often ask why I left the beauty of Colorado for Illinois and I always say it was because of family – more specifically my dad. I realized that while living my life was important, everything in life is temporary. The amount of time I have to spend with my dad is limited. I’m not married or tied to anything. I can always go back if I want. After I moved home I lived …

What to Do? Watch the Bears Game or Go to the Pinewood Derby?

Sometimes parents need to put themselves first.

For the last couple of weeks, my husband and two of the boys have designed, cut, sanded, painted, weighted down and decorated cars for the annual pinewood derby car race held by the Cub Scouts. It required a couple of trips to Ace Hardware and several hours of hard work. Since last year was the first experience for our family, we were anxious to see how the cars would do this year with the tweaks Pat and the boys made. There was one problem. The derby was on SUNDAY and Pat had been offered a ticket to THE GAME. Not just a game, but THE GAME–the historic playoff matchup between the Bears and the Packers with the winner going to the Super Bowl. What to do?
