Neuqua Valley 2, Geneva 0. The Wildcats will face Lyons at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Naperville Invitational finals.
One of the few things Neuqua Valley’s girls soccer program has yet to achieve is winning the Naperville Invitational. The nation’s top team will get that shot Saturday. After being shut out in the first half for the first time all season, Neuqua put away a pair of second-half goals to take down Geneva, 2-0, in the tournament semifinals. The Wildcats earned a date with a powerful Lyons team in Saturday’s 1 p.m. finals. The Lions knocked off defending state champion Waubonsie Valley, 1-0, in the other semifinal. “I have a bunch of friends on that team that I play with on my club team, and I know them well,” UCLA-bound senior Megan Oyster said of Lyons, who is now 14-2-1. “They’re good players and they’re definitely going to give us something…

Naperville Central 46, Neuqua Valley 41: Redhawks run streak to 14 wins in 15 games; reacht first sectional since 2008.
The Hot Read: Neuqua Valley had cut Naperville Central’s lead to 35-34 in the middle of the fourth quarter, but Jamie Cuny’s three-pointer with 2 minutes 40 seconds left sparked a 9-1 run that helped the Redhawks pull away and win the Class 4A East Aurora Regional title. The win was Central’s 14th victory in its past 15 games, a streak that started with a 45-40 win over Neuqua on Jan. 11. It’s the Redhawks’ first regional title since a seven-year streak of regional crowns was snapped in 2008. The game also featured two significant milestones. Coach Andy Nussbaum picked up his 500thcareer win and senior point guard Emma Ondik scored her 1,500th career point. She’s the third Central player to reach that milestone, following Erica Carter and …

Neuqua Valley had to defeat host East Aurora for a third time on Wednesday night to earn its first postseason encounter with Naperville Central since the controversial classic in 2003.
There was much on the line for Neuqua Valley. In order for the Wildcats to advance to the Class 4A East Aurora girls basketball regional final against Naperville Central, Neuqua had to defeat its Upstate Eight Valley rival and host East Aurora for a third time this season. Neuqua coach Mike Williams was more than relieved when his squad prevailed 48-27 Wednesday night in Aurora behind its smothering zone defense. “East Aurora is very talented,” Williams said. “It’s very difficult to beat a team a third time, especially on their home court.” Junior guard Megan Doody was equally relaxed in the aftermath of the Wildcats’ third win over the Tomcats. “They play us so hard every single time,” Doody said. The task was made even more difficult …

Neuqua Valley 48, East Aurora 27. Wildcats' advance to the championship game of the Tomcats' Class 4A regional with a valiant defensive effort.
The Hot Read: The story of Neuqua Valley's 48-27 girls basketball victory over East Aurora was defense. The Wildcats limited the Tomcats to single-digit scoring outputs in all four quarters on Wednesday night in semifinal play at the Class 4A East Aurora Regional. The Wildcats’ suffocated the Tomcats with an aggressive 1-3-1 zone. The Tomcats were harassed into a 9-for-49 shooting performance. Neuqua extended its perimeter defense so effectively that the Tomcats were 1-of-15 from beyond the arc. East Aurora turned the ball over 24 times, and its woes were further exaggerated with nine missed free throws. Neuqua Valley led 25-16 at halftime. The Tomcats never came closer than nine points in the second half, and the Wildcats gradually …

Freshman Niki Lazar scores seven straight points late as Wildcats defeat Hampshire 45-42 at Oswego Holiday Classic.
As one of six freshmen on Neuqua Valley’s varsity team, Niki Lazar knew the day would come when her and her fellow members of the Class of 2014 made an impact on the basketball court. She just didn’t think it would come so soon. With Lazar scoring Neuqua’s final seven points in a thrilling, down-to-the wire 45-42 win over previously unbeaten Hampshire (12-1), the Wildcats claimed the Oswego Holiday Classic championship Saturday and now sit at 11-1 heading into the Christmas break. “I knew we would be good when we got older, but no I didn’t expect this,” the 5-foot-6 guard said after her 13 points and seven rebounds helped hold off a Whip-Purs team that had won 41 of its last 43 games. “Tonight we came out and we didn’t give up.” On a night…

Six newcomers hope to help the Wildcats' girls basketball team bounce back from off year.
After last season's uncharacteristic down year, the Neuqua Valley girls basketball program was looking for a fresh start. A group of freshmen could play a big role in that resurgence, according to head coach Mike Williams. Guard Najee Smith and 6-foot-3 center Brenna Dunckel are just two of the half-dozen newcomers expecting to help the Wildcats improve on last year's 10-17 campaign. But while the freshmen get their feet wet, Neuqua will lean heavily on a trio of returning players — shooting guard Megan Doody and post players Alexa Wilde and Amber Smith. "The freshmen don't know any better. What I mean by that is they just play and play hard," Williams said. "That, combined with the leadership we have back from last year, makes for a …
