Perfect Lawns, Perfect Kids and Other Fibs

Let's Adopt A Better Attitude Toward Adoption

This mom's tired of dealing with adoption ignorance.

The kerfuffle over Ann Romney and Hilary Rosen really hit home for me. Not because I don’t think stay-at-home moms work very hard. I know they do. Not because Hilary Rosen thinks Ann Romney can’t speak for working moms. Frankly, I’d feel more comfortable if it were Mitt listening to moms’ concerns, but I’m pretty sure Ann is a good listener. She’d have to be to raise five kids. No, what hit home for me is the idea that, because she adopted her children, Hilary Rosen is less of a mother than Ann Romney. Witness this Tweet from the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights: “Lesbian Dem Hilary Rosen tells Ann Romney she never worked a day in her life. Unlike Rosen, who had to adopt kids, Ann raised 5 of her own.” So much about that …

How We Build Our Families Isn't A Building Code Issue

This mom's already built her family, so why should she care about a fertility clinic?

I never thought the opening of a fertility clinic would have any bearing on my life. I’ve built my family and am concentrating on raising the kids I’ve got. Still, the controversy surrounding the clinic to be developed by Dr. Randy Morris in downtown Naperville resonates with me.  While I had difficulty getting pregnant, I did eventually have a son without fertility treatments. In IVF, a number of embryos are created; only some are used. What to do with the remainder leaves many people deeply conflicted. Some people leave them frozen, paying for their storage year after year. Others donate them for adoption. Still others donate them for research. My father was recently diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. Stem cell research could provide a …

Illegal Immigrants Being Denied Motherhood: Mom Talk

Just because a worker is undocumented doesn't mean her children should be taken away from her.

We have a great country. Yet, sometimes there are blemishes. One such blemish is named Circuit Court Judge David C. Dally in Missouri. He’s more like a pimple, really, a pimple on the behind of the American justice system. Judge Dally terminated the parental rights of a mother because she was an undocumented worker. She was jailed for two years and her son was adopted against her will. The boy, now 5, has been living with an American family, Melinda and Seth Moser. They call him Jamison. They all speak English. The birth mother, Encarnacion Bail Romero, is from Guatemala and speaks only Spanish. I am an educated person. Still, I cannot begin to understand the complexity of the immigration problem we face. What I do know is that taking a …

Adopt Me!

Adopt Me! Kitty Purry and Copper

More dogs and cats are ready for adoption at the Naperville Area Humane Society.

Kitty Purry is a 1-year old medium-haired cat available for adoption.  She came to the shelter with a litter of kittens and spent a couple of months in a foster home. All her kittens were adopted and she's still waiting for her forever home. She's very easygoing and gets along well with other cats and dogs. She would make a great family cat and can live with kids of all ages. Copper is a 3-year old Chihuahua/Miniature Pinscher-mix.  He is very affectionate and loves to snuggle with people. He can be nervous in new situations and needs someone very patient who will let him do things at his own pace. Kids in his new home should be at least 12-years old. He needs to be the only dog but might get along with a dog-savvy cat.  More dogs and cats…

Adopt Me! Garfield and Barbi-Q

Here are two of the adoptable pets available at the Naperville Area Humane Society.

I'm Garfield, a 4-year-old cat available for adoption at the Naperville Area Humane Society.  I bet you can guess how I got my name. And trust me, I have just as much personality as any cartoon cat! My favorite activity is playing with toy balls, but I also enjoy sunbathing, eating and napping. Anyone up for a game of kitty soccer? Then come in to meet me today! Hi, I'm Barbi-Q, a 1-year-old greyhound/retriever mix. I'm about as sweet and friendly as they come! I was transferred in from a shelter in Oklahoma and I'm so excited to be here in Naperville to find my new forever home. I was picked up as a stray. They found me hiding behind a barbecue grill, so that's how I got my name. I'm still a young girl, so I need some obedience training. …

Adopt Me! Maya and Clara

Here are two of the adoptable pets available at the Naperville Area Humane Society.

I'm Maya, a 2-year-old American Stafforshire Terrier mix. I'm always on the move! I'm just full of energy and exuberance. I was returned to Naperville Area Humane Society because my first family didn't realize how energetic I am. I'm looking for a home with people who are dog-savvy and able to keep up with my activity level. If you run, I'd make a great jogging partner! I'm playful and friendly and get along great with both cats and dogs. Kids in my new home should be 12 and older because I'm a lot of dog! Stop by and see me soon! I'm Clara, a 10-year-old cat available for adoption. I don't really like being in the shelter. Everyone is very nice to me, but I'm looking forward to when I'm adopted and can relax in my new home. I would really…

Adopt Me! Prince and Bella

Prince and Bella are just two of the many pets ready for adoption at Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment.

Prince was rescued from Chicago animal control. His name speaks volumes to his special personality.  He is a 10-year-old Maltese weighing 6 pounds.  This guy is truly a compassionate little gentleman. He loves to curl up in your lap to feel safe and loved. He simply wants to be your companion and has an enormous amount of love to give. He has a deformed hind leg but it doesn't hamper his activity at all. Prince is looking for that special home where he will be content being a faithful and constant companion. Beautiful Bella was given up when her owner had to move to a place where the landlord wouldn't allow pets.  She is a mellow gal who laps up all the attention she can get in her own quiet way. You can usually find her sitting pretty. …

Pets of the Week: Mariah and Einstein

Ready to welcome a furry friend into the family? Here are some some pets ready for adoption.

I'm Mariah Kitty, a 1-year-old kitty looking for a home. I have a great singing voice, and if you're good, I might let you hear it! I'm sweet and vocal. I also like to play with toys on strings and sit in your lap to take a nap. I sometimes play-bite, so kids in my new home should be older. I should be the only pet in the house.  I'm Einstein, a 1-year-old Cattle Dog mix. Do you think you can tire me out? I have energy to burn! People say that a lot about one dog or another, but it's the honest truth about me. My breed mix should be a clue that I'm extremely smart and would like to be busy all the time. Need a running partner? Great. Thought about doing agility training with a dog, but couldn't find the right one? I'm your guy. I need …

Pet of the Week: Lulu

Lulu is ready for adoption at Animals Deserving of Proper Treatment.

No dog loves people as much as Lulu does!  She is 2 1/2 year old Lhasa Apso and Pekingese-mix who just loves to be around people. She is more active than your typical Pekingese and will run around the backyard like she's out to win some sort of race. She has acclimated to the other dogs in her foster home, but is still not the best with the cats. If you are ever having a bad day, all you need to do is spend some time with Lulu and she is sure to make you smile! She will cheer you up as she rolls around on the floor, throws her toys in the air and then pounces on them for a more dramatic effect. For more information about any of the dogs we have available for adoption please contact A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter at 630-355-2299.  The shelter is a …
