Students and the teachers who inspired them while attending Neuqua Valley, Waubonsie Valley and Metea Valley high schools were recently recognized for Excellence in Education.
Submitted by Indian Prairie School District 204 The Indian Prairie Educational Foundation (IPEF) recently recognized 90 graduating seniors (30 from each high school), who were selected as the honorees for this year's Excellence in Education program. One student was nominated by each of the 10 academic departments at Metea Valley, Neuqua Valley, and Waubonsie Valley High Schools. Also recognized was a teacher or other staff member, who each student indicated has been a source of inspiration or had the “most influence” on his or her academic success. “This program is special because it not only honors the student's hard work, but it provides a platform for the students to thank their teachers,” said IPEF Board Member Mary Anne Castro, who …

For the second day in a row, a Naperville teacher was announced as a Golden Apple Foundation award-winner for Excellence in Teaching. U.S. News & World Report releases the fourth edition of its ranking of high schools around the country.
Sixteen area high schools are ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s evaluation of nearly 22,000 American public high schools. Of all of the public schools serving Naperville students, Neuqua Valley High School received the highest ranking among the other District 204 and District 203 schools. The rankings were released as part of the Best High School rankings, now in its fourth edition. The methodology to produce the rankings included test scores, state assessments and college-level coursework, such as Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, both of which include college-level courses. A cloudy Wednesday afternoon turned into a burst of excitement at Highlands Elementary School as bright lights in the form of camera flashes filled Kathy Burns’ second grade classroom today. Naperville School District 203 staff, media and Burns’ family surprised both Burns and her students by announcing she was the recipient of the Golden Apple Foundation’s "Excellence in Teaching" award. Washington Junior High School principal Bob Ross named Assistant Superintendant for Secondary Education during Monday's board of education meeting.
Naperville School District 203 has named principal of Washington Junior High School Bob Ross as the new Assistant Superintendent for Secondary Education. The position became available with the recent appointment of Dan Bridges to the position of interim superintendent for the district after Mark Mitrovich announced he is resigning as of June 30. Ross has served as principal at Washington Junior High since 2006 as well as serving as co-chair of the core team for the School-Family-Community Partnership. Prior to coming to the district, Ross was an elementary school principal and assistant elementary principal in Elmwood Park. He also taught social studies for seven years in Bloomingdale. On Monday night, the board voted to release 80 classified and non-bargaining staff.
After one board member issued a mea culpa, the Indian Prairie District 204 Board of Education voted Monday night to release 80 classified and non-bargaining staff. The unanimous vote to release the staff was made during the board’s regular business meeting. The vote was taken after the board approved the hiring of three new principals. Board Member Mark Rising said he couldn’t vote on the measure without reiterating the position the board was in. “I don’t want our classified staff to feel they haven’t been given the attention that our associate staff received,” he said. “I know there are 80 staff that are going to be released. I want our classified staff to know we did everything we could. … This was the best outcome we could decide on.” …
Board of education announces proposed 2012-13 budget now available for next 30 days until public hearing June 18.
For the next 30 days, Naperville residents can review the proposed 2012-13 budget for Naperville School District 203 before a public hearing June 18. Dave Zager, the district’s chief finance officer, said the budget is balanced. Compared to last year, the operating budget has increased 4 percent to $233 million and the total budget is $240.9 million for 2012-13. Zager also noted the tax increase for residents during Monday night's Board of Education meeting. "With the tax levy that we passed last year, our taxpayers are paying about 1.5 percent, on average, more than they were last year," Zager said. The men's track and field team set a new school record, the women's team finished at the top of its standings and the women's golf team closed the spring season with a win.
