Illinois receives 100% of the lottery profits, right! Oh I'm sorry, that's what Illinois said inRead More the 1970's when the lottery came to be. Where did all of those dollars go? GENERAL FUND? I remember so many "temporary" income tax increases as well too. Liars? Lawyers? Same thing?
Amin Falaq April 23, 2014 at 10:24 pm
Tim F. I was just about to address the same issue of the lottery getting approved based on itRead More proceeds would be earmarked for Illinois schools.

Break in someones house, get shot, that simple. Now to go up and shoot the boy directly in the faceRead More with him already down??? That raises a question. Then go wait for a full day to call and notify the police, now that raises a question.?? What the hell is the bottom line problem with this man that he would OVERKILL, and Keep the bodies for a full day without calling the police.?

Plainfield central is unranked. Scores are about the same as Joliet West.

So the questions are: "What does #1 do that's better than HPHS? How can HPHS improve? What'sRead More holding us back?" Compare and contrast.
Bernard Johnson April 24, 2014 at 12:48 am
The 'quality adjustment' to the AP results appear to be the only basis as to why DHS wasn't rankedRead More above Stevenson - as the # 1 truly 'public' [taking all comers - not getting to pick and choose its student body - like the academies and/or magnets] in the State of Illinois. OK, so, DHS will have to 'try harder.' As for Highland-Park, what's the story over there; and the same goes for New Trier? My, how the once mighty have fallen. Go Big Red!

You want to talk about fools in government? Remember, this was not the first attack on the World Trade Center? Who let it happen? shame on all of you and your so called facts. your behavior is apparent. feeling sorry for all the women, young and old, who are part of your families. i bet you don't even let them vote or drive cars

What kind of a stupid, malicious idiot would pull that sort of a prank? I agree that the kid whoRead More made the phone call to the SWAT team about his opposing video games player was a sore loser, which is why he did that, but he should be criminally prosecuted, made to pay the bill, and perhaps do some community service in order to pay off that big bill. Hopefully, that kid will learn a lesson if he is prosecuted for his prank, which he should be.

Illinois is one of the top most corrupt states in the USA. I have two more years in this GodRead More forsaken state, then after my daughter finishes school, I'm out of here! My home may be paid off, but I still pay at least $500 a month for property taxes--and I live in the older section with a 55 year old house!!

Shameful! The audacity to want more is as bold as cat manure. They sell the lottery, lease theRead More toll way, to their friends, all the while saying they need more money. This really stinks.

Also - if they don't get compensated, they will be serving their own interests ( like say they areRead More a lawyer who represents folks who come in from the council and/or zoning board and they can make money giving "legal" advice ). I'd prefer council members who serve ALL of the citizens, and not just the ones who pay.
Voice of The People April 22, 2014 at 07:07 pm
@southeast side - What exactly does that say about the past and current council members? What doesRead More that say about the school board, the PUAB, the Zoning Board? To assume that someone who decides to donate their time is only doing it because they are rich, retired or have something personal to gain, is faulty logic at best.
Kevin Piket April 23, 2014 at 09:25 am
Southeast Side, the people who serve on the various School Boards and Park Boards don't get paid andRead More they do as much work as the City Council does. In fact the School District portion of our tax bill is much larger than the City's portion. For you to say that people who get elected to the City Council and don't get paid would "serve their own interests" is disingenuous and just plain wrong. If people are going to serve their own interest, they will do it whether they get paid or not. It's more about who they are as a person than if they get paid for serving or not.

I appreciate you getting to the bottom of this, Lisa!
Lisa April 23, 2014 at 09:12 am
Sure thing, Jen. I'd like to know too since I may have unintentionally contributed to the continuedRead More dissemination of misinformation. On Monday afternoon, when the reporter, Amie Schaenzer, who wrote this article, published her initial article about the incident, I e-mailed her to say, "What about including in the story (esp. the Wheaton edition) that Mark Stankus, the man who saved the survivor of the kayak accident, is a Wheaton school teacher? I don’t know him, but I read about him in the Daily Herald’s report of the accident."

Don't worry about it. I appreciate you for trying to make things right.
Everyday Mathematics is just one of the programs that makes a heck of a lot of $ off of the millions of textbooks sold to schools that teach to the 'Core.' The Common Core isn't just restricting for teachers & students, it's lining people's pockets.
Susan Harris April 23, 2014 at 09:12 pm
Tamara, what social studies standards are you talking about? The Common Core only covers standardsRead More in literacy and math. There are no CC standards for science or history. Are you talking about state standards?
Tamara April 23, 2014 at 10:35 pm
Common Core has science and social studies standards - they were written after math and ELA - theyRead More have not been implemented yet. They are more controversial so math and ELA was put thru first to pave the way.

FOR THOSE WHO LIKE AMAZON PRIME OVER NETFLIX: Here's an interesting article from today (23 Apr 2014)Read More about how Amazon Prime just got HBO to stream at least some of its older content, plus "HBO GO," to Amazon's new Fire TV box, thereby making NetFlix upset because NetFlix (nor any other streaming service, including HULU) has never been able to get any HBO content; and so Amazon has scored a real coup!
