Chicago has the top four spots and five in the top ten. What are we doing wrong in the suburbs?Read More Naperville can't crack the top ten with the amount of property taxes we pay??

All five Chicago schools are magnets with selective enrollment. Stevenson has some advantageRead More because of sheer size and # of AP tests the students there take. I still think that Df and HP are more desirable because of their slightly smaller size.

Plainfield central is unranked. Scores are about the same as Joliet West.

So the questions are: "What does #1 do that's better than HPHS? How can HPHS improve? What'sRead More holding us back?" Compare and contrast.

"Virtual walls"? Geezus... GPS spoofing is but one way around the geofence. The otherRead More is simply walking up to someone and saying "HEY *(&*(^^#&*(Y($*() !!!!!" Or use a different app created with a bogus email account... *sigh*. Sticks and stones people... sticks and stones... Walk it off and move on...

thats for sure, this country is turning into a bunch of pansies!!

my kid tells me that his buddy who lives over in Europe has a math book that shows a drawing of anRead More obese American eating a Cheeseburger with Plumbers Ass , as if we are a bunch of slobs over here!!! Is that nice or what???

How about teaching our kids instead of running socialistic, quasi-mind bending propaganda sessions.Read More Since when is it the purvey of schools to engage is psychological/sociological reeducation of our kids? Between Common Core and this nonsense (not to mention the cost) it's beginning to sound like what all tyrants do, convert/propagandize the kids and you change society. We as citizen don't pay you do either!

Speaking of common core being crap, here is the perfect example of why common core should beRead More stopped. http://shine.yahoo.com/healthy-living/common-core-parent-facebook-post-indiana-school-181841158.html Enjoy!!!

When did social-emotional teaching, health of students and “finding balance” become aRead More principal focus of schools? These are better left to the health community and parents. The purpose of schools is to impart the 3 R’s. The more money that is spent on education and the smaller the class sizes become, the poorer our children’s education becomes. Add Common Core and it is easy to see why our children are quickly becoming functional illiterates – no time to teach grammar or cursive writing anymore, or read classical literature. No time for the basics? Just exactly what are the schools doing with all that time?

Good for you Tyrone for standing up to these never ending weed growers who destroy the beautifulRead More gardens of our children's minds who long to be free from propaganda spewed by the left telling them it's not their parents value systems that count but rather big brother government who will take care of them. What they fail to tell them is economic, social, religious and political slavery is the final price that must be paid by them for these proposed and actual benefits.

As a last thought the writer of this article failed to mention you children will be tracked fromRead More kindergarten through k12 on every grade, every medical issue, every teachers note, every disciplinary action (even though done by a nut case teacher) and this data will be shared with the government and whoever they want to sell it too. Common core is the brain child of crony capitalist and corrupt politicians (through the Dept. of Education) like Gates who stand to make billions because his software is the CORE of all of this tracking, grading and potential selling of your child's information.

As a teacher I can say that this whole system is bs and is being put in to place by government hacksRead More who have no idea what it's like to stand in a classroom and teach 25 different learners. CC will dictate to me that I treat every child the same, keep data to a point that it interferes with actual teaching, and ultimately will make robots of our children. Hopefully, most parents will see this, pull their children from the public school systems, and not give their vote to the government "educators" who have implemented this garbage. Despite what they are leading you to believe, it will not challenge and/or level the playing field for all.....it will in fact, leave many kids behind and the results of the testing (which will drive my performance evaluation in a couple of years) will show that we're dumbing down our youth. A word of advice to our future teachers....don't do it....

Just part of the dumbing down of our children to make good little collectivist out of them. Let'sRead More see we have eliminated the times tables because their little computers and cell phones have a calculator, why learn to read at all since the same computer has voice translators and recognition software. Most of the education system should be designed to have children think and memorization of core things (pun intended) allows them to develop the synapses necessary to do so. Long past time to get the government out of our lives before they destroy the next generation as they have done with the past three.

Common Core was instituted by crony capitalist like Gates (Microsoft) who stand to make billionsRead More since his software and tests will be used to track, monitor and follow our kids from kindergarten to college. No legislature approved this program and the Fed Dept. of Education used our tax dollars to bribe the state school boards to sign on to this program which if implemented will make good little socialist of our kids. The common in common core is yet another national takeover of yet one more key societal variable like they have done with health care, utilities, fossil fuels, food, private property, water rights (rain tax), etc., etc. Every good dictator weather communist or fascist realized to win over the next generations you need to control education and for adults to control their health care. We are half way there.

All kids learn differently and there is no one method that will work for all kids in allRead More demographics of the country. This cookie cutter approach takes away all individuality and only encourages group think. All people think and learn differently, and this uniqueness should be encouraged to create future leaders, scientists, entrepreneurs... National continuity? What happened to the USA being the best and superior? The rest of the world should be striving to keep up with us. The only thing group think is good for is creating a socialist society.

And William.....get your facts straight on teacher pay....better yet, if you think it's so lucrativeRead More there should be plenty of job openings in the profession coming up since CC is going to boost most teachers out of the profession...then you can come on in and get your "7%."
compass1616 December 21, 2013 at 11:41 pm
Teacher bashers....get a clue.....we're on your side, believe it or not. We're being programmed byRead More government a-holes and incompetent admin and any human element to our job is being abolished. If we stray from the Common hardCore we will be evaluated as not competent and God forbid we use any of our own common sense or human element to help a student....it is becoming the education factory.
compass1616 December 21, 2013 at 11:50 pm
Tyrone....sorry you had a bad experience....keep in mind that most teachers are judged not by whatRead More they can do, but if they do what they are told to do....and often this comes from people who have lost touch with or have no to little experience in the classroom. They dictate to teachers what good teaching is supposed to be. As far as tutoring....not all kids will learn at the same rate or comprehend right away....tutoring is okay...doesn't always mean the teacher is a boob. Someone has to be the scapegoat, but it's time for the public to move the goat from the teacher to the level above....admin is rarely held accountable for anything and if they are called out, they just blame their teachers. I'm not making excuses, please understand that, but the public in general is not getting the whole picture.
Moms Demand Action video about gun violence in schools.
Gerard Schilling October 17, 2013 at 11:05 am
All you have to do is compare states/cities with draconian gun laws preventing law abiding citizensRead More from owning and carry them with places like Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia etc. to see the problem is not guns but the people who use them. More people get killed by knives, ball bats and cars and nobody tries to ban them. Just another attempt to take away our 2ed amendment rights and make it easier to eventually institute martial law which is what the current administration wants and is working towards.
