October 7-13, 2012 marks Fire Prevention Week- Are you prepared?

Did you know that cooking is the #1 cause of home fires and injuries?  Most cooking fires in the home involve the stovetop.  Stay in the kitchen while using the stove and keep anything that can catch fire (oven mitt, towel, etc.) away from the stovetop.

Heating is the #2 cause of home fires.  Half of home heating fires are reported
during the months of December through February. Keep anything that can burn at least three feet away from open fires and space heaters.

The #3 cause of home fires and injuries are candles.  On average, a candle fire is reported to the U.S. fire department every 30 minutes.  Consider using flameless candles in your home instead. They look and smell like real candles.

Make sure your home has working smoke alarms. Smoke alarms that are properly installed and maintained play a vital role in reducing fire deaths and injuries.  Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds.  Sit down with everyone in your household and plan a fire escape drill so everyone is prepared.
