I have noticed that in the past six months or so, my hair has been getting really thin.  It’s driving me crazy!  I’m only 53 years old, so I don’t understand what is going on.  I could see if I was 83, but since I’m not, I don’t get it.  Can you help?  I don’t know what’s happening to my hair.

Dear Mary,

First of all, I assure you Mary, you are not alone.  There are so many women asking me about why their hair is thinning out.  While hair does naturally thin a bit as we age, there can definitely be other factors that can contribute to it as well.  One question I always ask when someone is concerned about their hair thinning out is whether or not they are taking medication.  Medication can change the texture and density of the hair.  Second, it’s important to have some blood work done if there are major changes to your hair.  It’s a good idea to rule out any medical issues such as thyroid problems and other conditions that can cause hair to thin.  Finally, make sure you are getting regular haircuts.  This is important because if the hair begins to split, it will split right up to the scalp.  You don’t want split ends.  Nothing will make the hair thin faster than split ends.  First things first.  Definitely see your doctor and request a blood panel.  Once you’ve ruled out any medical issues, go get a nice trim! I hope this helps, Mary.
