Excitement builds toward North Central College 150th on Nov. 11

This is an incredible time at , as the celebration of the College’s Sesquicentennial builds toward a crescendo on 11/11/11. That’s the actual 150th anniversary of the first day of classes in 1861.

The College hosted an amazing evening with Caroline Kennedy on Oct. 5 and a truly memorable performance by Yo-Yo Ma on Oct. 1.

The Sesquicentennial Author Series presented in partnership with Anderson’s Bookshops continues with visits by noted authors Philippa Gregory on Oct. 23 and Bill Bryson on Oct. 26. Upcoming performances in the 2011-2012 Fine & Performing Arts Sesquicentennial Season include shows by The Jack Mouse Group on Oct. 14, The Beach Boys on Oct. 15-16, the Latin chorale group Schola Cantorum de Venezuela on Oct. 26 and Herbie Hancock on Oct. 30. This is Hancock’s first tour as a solo artist, and audience members are sure to experience an unforgettable evening in Wentz Concert Hall.

North Central theater students stage nine productions this academic year, including the adult comedy “Distracted” Oct. 20-23 and the ever-popular musical “Guys and Dolls” — with performances Nov. 3-6, 9 and 12.

The Cardinals have home football games on Saturdays, hosting rival Wheaton College on Nov. 5 and North Park University in a Homecoming game on Nov. 12. Both games will be broadcast live on and may be viewed online at nctv17.com.

More details about Sesquicentennial Homecoming Week will be covered in the next column, but in case you missed it, the college just announced singer/guitarist Colbie Caillat will perform a solo acoustic show Nov. 10 in Wentz Concert Hall.

Also in October, North Central College draws its largest annual crowd of the year when more than 5,000 people pack Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium to watch high school football when Naperville North takes on Naperville Central this Friday, Oct. 14 in the Wes Spencer Crosstown Classic.
