Visitors are invited to become part of the new exhibit at titled “Food for Thought.” From sharing a favorite comfort food to arranging the food timeline in chronological order to writing on the walls, the exhibit invites interaction.
“We wanted to do something that was more participatory,” said Jennifer Bridge, Curator of Exhibits and Interpretation. “We wanted to try more hands-on activities and get people thinking about food in a museum setting.”

The walls are coated with chalkboard paint so visitors can share their thoughts on the topic of the day, whether it’s bacon or their favorite food. A checkered picnic blanket, woven basket and other picnic items invite families to have an impromptu pretend picnic, and then share the photo on Naper Settlement’s Facebook page. The exhibit also takes visitors out of the gallery and onto the grounds on a scavenger hunt to search for food-related items in the historic buildings.
There’s also a wish list of contemporary items the Curatorial Department would like donated to the collection, such as Naperville restaurant-related items, including menus and photographs; family cookbooks used locally; and community cookbooks compiled by local organizations including churches, schools and not-for-profits.

“It’s an opportunity to become part of an exhibit and share your experiences with other visitors,” Bridge said.
