Kifowit Measure to Save Disabled Veterans Money and Time For Parking Privileges Passes House

AURORA, Ill. – Continuing her efforts to support disabled veterans, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, passed legislation to make it easier for disabled veterans to renew a disabled parking placard or decal out of the House Wednesday.

“Disabled veterans have made tremendous sacrifices for our community and country, and I want to see that they are able to access the resources they deserve without onerous red tape,” Kifowit said. “While we may never be able to fully repay the debt we owe to these brave men and women, we can take steps to assure they are cared for and remove unnecessary burdens from their lives.”

Kifowit’s Senate Bill 3255 exempts veterans with a permanent disability that have been granted a disabled parking placard or decal from the requirement that they provide evidence of the disability in order to renew their decal or placard. Currently, the Secretary of State requires proof of continued disability every four years in order to renew a disabled parking placard or decal.

Kifowit also supported House Bill 4491 this session, which allows veterans eligible for Purple Heart license plates to display the plate on one vehicle without payment of any registration or registration renewal fee. House Bill 4491 passed both legislative chambers and is now with the governor.

“Lowering fees and reducing bureaucracy is one simple way we can give back to our veterans,” Kifowit said. “Annual or regular renewals of license plates are not necessary when veterans have verified their disability, and in my opinion, disabled veterans should be free to enjoy life, not forced to duplicate these basic tasks and repeatedly prove they fought and sacrificed for our nation.”
