Kifowit Invites Area Families To Get One-on-One Help at Property Tax Assessment Seminar

AURORA, Ill. – In an effort to help residents with the process of appealing property taxes, state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit, D-Oswego, is hosting an informational seminar, with one-on-one assistance, on Thursday, June 19 from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Aurora Public Library’s Eola branch.

“One of the top concerns I hear from my constituents is the weight of their property taxes,” Kifowit said. “Having gone door-to-door and talking to area families directly, I understand the worries and frustrations residents have when it comes time to pay property taxes.”

Kifowit will be joined by the DuPage and Kane County Assessors, as well as the DuPage County Clerk to help explain and aid homeowners with issues regarding property taxes. This seminar will cover the basics of property assessments, how to appeal the assessment, and what exemptions are available. Kifowit also worked to pass legislation this spring to lessen the burden of property taxes on area homeowners. This session, she sponsored Senate Bill 347 to end a system where property taxpayers are penalized with increased bills when calculations are rounded up.

“We all know that every dollar matters in these tough economic times,” Kifowit said. “I encourage my neighbors to come out to not only understand the process of assessments, but to also see if they qualify for any exemptions.”
