Waubonsie Valley Captures Third Straight Aurora Championship

The Waubonsie Valley boys golf team won the Aurora City Tournament for the third straight time on Wednesday at Phillips Park behind four players in the 70s.

was a battle-hardened team the last two years with a state appearance in 2009.
But some things have not changed much for the Warriors’ boys golf team.
With four players shooting in the 70s Wednesday afternoon at Phillips Park, won its third straight Aurora City Tournament with a 314 total.
Metea Valley, which had the individual champion in Adam Kreimer, was 10 shots behind its fellow school.
Marmion was third, denying IMSA and Aurora Central Catholic by three combined strokes; West Aurora, Aurora Christian and East Aurora rounded out the eight-school tournament.
Alec Koulos and Alex Meyer are the proven veterans for , but it is the progression of varsity newcomers Austin Datz and Jason Marrs who proved the difference.
“That shows maturity,” Waubonsie coach Dave Owles said. The newcomers “are learning to deal with adversity.”
Koulos and Datz had matching 7-over 78s on the afternoon in which several players commented on the draconian nature of the pin placements.
Meyer and Marrs also authored duplicating 79s to frame the Warriors’ championship total, more than 20 strokes higher than when they captured the city title last fall.
“This was probably the worst I have struck (the ball) all year,” Koulos said. “My short game saved me today.”
Meyer, the Warriors’ top-rated player, was 1-over at the turn but struggled coming in with a inward-nine 42.
But Datz picked up the slack with his 78 as the fifth man.
“It’s nice to rely on other golfers in case you have a bad round,” Datz said. “We have a lot of good golfers.”
Kreiner followed his front-nine 37 with the same number coming in to deny Marmion senior Matt Fazio by a stroke for top individual honors.
The Mustangs’ senior won his first prep tournament with his medalist 74.
“They put the pins in the toughest spots they could,” Kreiner said. “As a team we have been pretty solid this year.”
Matt Marsh had his eagle bid at the 15th hole slide by on the low side, but the Mustangs’ No. 1 player augmented the Kreiner gem with a 78 of his own.
“I am very pleased with second place,” Metea coach Ryan Hall said. “We are 21 shots better than we were last year.”
West Aurora is still searching for a team identity after graduating several key players in recent years.
Ricky Rivera had the round of his season with an 80 to lead the Blackhawks.
“The surprise of the tournament was Ricky Rivera shooting an 80 as the sixth man,” West Aurora coach Jay Bauer said.
The Blackhawks’ Jonathon Hunecke had his potentially solid round undermined by the nefarious pins that baffled so many players.
“I 3-putted way too much,” Hunecke said. “That’s what killed the round. I hit a lot of greens in regulation but kept 3-putting.”
Hunecke finished with an 87 for West High; the Blackhawks’ Jackson Bailey and Blake Kauffman were the other scorers for the Blackhawks.
Troy Dolema was the team leader for East Aurora.
