North Central College wrestler Andrew Zobac is off to a fast start.
For the third consecutive week, Zobac was named the CCIW Wrestler of the Week.
His 4-3 decision over Kevin Donahue of Cornell College, a two-time Division III All-American and the seventh-ranked 141-pound wrestler in the nation, at the North Central Quadrangular Saturday keyed this week's award.
Zobac, a junior, is 21-1 so far this season, building upon last season's 23-12 campaign, which saw him win the CCIW title at 141 pounds.
The only thing preventing Zobac from winning four straight honors is the schedule. The Cardinals are off until heading to Northwestern for the Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30.
The Cardinals went 2-1 at the quad Saturday. They started with a 52-0 win over Wheaton before falling to 10th-ranked Cornell. The 24th-ranked Cardinals recovered with a 23-17 win over Heidelberg.
* North Central's men's basketball team made the trek to Hawaii last week, and fell to Hawaii-Hilo in a shootout, 97-87.
The loss snapped a three-game Cardinals winning streak as they fell to 3-5. Freshman guard CJ Goldthree once again led the way. For the second straight game, Goldthree went over 20 points, this time scoring 23 in 23 minutes, including 6-of-9 shooting from the three-point line.
For his efforts, Goldthree was named the CCIW Player of the Week. Through eight games, Goldthree is the Cardinals' leading scorer at 12.3 points per game.
Neuqua Valley graduate Derek Raridon and Kevin Gillespie each scored 15 for North Central.
The Cardinals are back on the mainland and will travel down the street to face Benedictine at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
* The North Central women's basketball team dropped a pair of decisions last week to fall to 3-6.
Thursday, the Cardinals fell to Greenville on the road, 60-53. Jackie Errico led the way with 20 points and nine rebounds. Helen Muleya had 12 points and six steals.
Saturday, the Cardinals traveled to Indiana and lost to Franklin, 71-63. Muleya scored a career-high 18 points to lead North Central. Terra Musgrove chipped in 11 off the bench.
North Central finishes up a six-game road kick tonight at Benedictine.
* The Cardinals' men's and women's swimming teams traveled to Costa Rica last week, with the women topping club team Asociacion Brumosa de Natacion, 81-6, and the men falling to ABRUNA, 61-38.
For the women's team, Lorlei Patschke, Kelsey Tumpane and Alyssa Walters each won three events. Jake Nurczyk won four events for the men's team. The teams are off until Jan. 8.
