NCC Spotlight: Golf's Mary Kate Rohn

The weekly series continues with North Central College women's golf team

sophomore student-athlete Mary Kate Rohn was named the College Conference of Illinois & Wisconsin (CCIW) Women's Golfer of the Week for Sept. 19-25.

Rohn became the first North Central golfer to receive one of the CCIW's weekly honors after her fifth-place finish at the Millikin University Fall Classic in Decatur on Sept. 24-25. Rohn finished with a 36-hole score of 155, her best two-round score as a collegian, finishing with totals of 77 and 78.

Congratulations on becoming the CCIW Women's Golfer of the Week. What's been the reaction from teammates, family and friends? I got a few congratulatory texts from my teammates, saying how awesome the award is and how proud they are. Clark was actually the first person to tell me about the award, and he said "Congrats miss CCIW golfer of the week." My coach sent out an email to everyone about how proud he is and he described it as a "job well done." My parents were both very excited, my mom even sent an email out to all my uncles with the good news.

The women's golf team has played in Naperville only once this year? Describe a typical bus ride, and tell us who the talkers are, the sleepers, the studiers and the laughers. We are always travelling. A bus ride is never dull. On the way to one of our trips, Kayla (Hutcherson), one of our freshman, and I got gumballs the size of our fists. That was a fun time. Kayla is the one who is always dancing and listening to music. Marisa (Miko) is definitely the most musical of all of us, singing her way through every bus ride. I am more of a studier, when I am not sleeping or listening to music. Alayna (Dufour) is definitely a talker, and the one who laughs at all of Taylor's jokes just like me. Mal (Carr) likes to listen to her iPod, and enjoyed when we played Madlibs one time. All of the other girls, Megan (Patterson), Holly (Dryden), Jessica (Lim), Alex (Caputo), and Rachel (Phipps), like to keep their cool.

What are you known for on the team? This can be on the course or off it. I am known as the girl who can make everyone laugh, especially my roommate Marisa. I am also know as the person who likes to laugh at my own jokes. In my opinion, if the game isn't fun, why play? I am very serious when it comes to my game; I have so much passion and desire to play well. I also try to be in good spirits, making sure everyone is feeling good and ready to play. On the course, I like to chat and interact with the people I'm playing with to make the four hours more enjoyable.

Finish this sentence: Without golf in your life, you'd be... sad and bored out of my mind. Golf consumes a lot of my time, but I like it that way. I love playing new courses and meeting new people. Golf makes me so happy and I can't imagine life without it.

The CCIW Championships in Davenport, Iowa, are just around the corner -- two matches from now. What's the chatter from the team centered around? We want to be the CCIW Champions, showing just how hard we have worked this year. We know we can do it, and we have our hearts set on that one goal, TO WIN AND HAVE FUN!
