Mangal Leads Area Girls Golfers at State

Waubonsie Valley senior finishes tied for 45th in Class AA to lead four local entries.

Play wrapped up Saturday for the four local participants in the Class AA Girls Golf State Championships at Hickory Point Golf Course in Forsyth.

The highest of the local finishers was Waubonsie Valley senior Cherise Mangal, who tied for 45th individually with a two-day total of 169. She shot an 85 on Saturday to follow up her 84 from Friday.

The two Naperville Central entries finished within a stroke of each other. Junior Sarah DeGeeter wound up tied for 59th with a two-day total of 176. She suffered a triple-bogey on the last hole of the tournament to give her an 88 for both days. The 18th was a struggle all weekend for DeGeeter. She had a quadruple-bogey there on Friday to offset a birdie on No. 11.

Senior Carolyn Wong, the DuPage Valley Conference champion and regional medalist, was a stroke behind her Central teammate with a 177, good for a tie for 63rd overall. Wong shot an 85 Friday with a birdie on No. 4 and started solid with a birdie on No. 5 Saturday, but wound up with a 92 Saturday.

Waubonsie Valley senior Maggie Miklasz tied for 96th in the 108-player field with a 192. She shot a 97 Saturday after a 95 Friday.

Overall, defending champion Homewood-Flossmoor was upset for the team title by New Trier, which won by three strokes. Stevenson sophomore Stephanie Miller shot a three-under-par 69 Friday en route to the individual title. She shot a 3-under 141 overall.

St. Thomas Moore of Champaign rolled to the Class A team title.
