Learn How to Sculpt Bonsai Trees at Arboretum Programs

The Morton Arboretum in Lisle hosting several workshops on the art of Bonsai.

They include:

A workshop for teens and tweens ages 8 to 14 on called “Banyan Ficus” teaching tween and young teens the art of Bonsai. They’ll learn how to style and shape this tropical plant and take home their finished tree. All experience levels are welcome. The costs are $28 plus a $15 materials fee with discounts for Arboretum members. This event will be held in the Research Building from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Students learn how to care for the Dawn Redwood. Enjoy the lush, delicate green foliage through the spring and summer and a spectacular burnt-red in the fall. Students will work with a field–grown tree potted in a 3-gallon nursery container as they learn styling, wiring techniques and after care. All levels are welcome. The costs are $48 plus a $40 materials fee with discounts for Arboretum members. This program is for all ages and will take place in the Research Building from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. 

Learn how to care for Bonsai trees with the forgiving Korean Boxwood. Learn proper placement, scale and dimension for these easier to sculpt Bonsai. This boxwood has small leaves and a great ability to handle heavy pruning. This is a great class for someone just starting out. All levels are welcome and the costs are $48 plus a $50 materials fee with discounts for Arboretum members. This program is for all ages and takes place in the Research Building from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
