Talented Wheaton Warrenville South girls take first at indoor conference meet at North Central College.

girls track coach Chuck Hoff knows he has some talented girls who can perform well this spring, but he also knows all to well that Wheaton Warrenville South will once again be the team to beat in the DuPage Valley Conference.

The Tigers won the outdoor conference crown last spring, followed that up with a great cross country campaign and kicked off this new track season by claiming top honors at the DVC Indoor Championships Thursday night at .

WW South finished the meet strong to overtake West Aurora 106 to 88.50 for top honors. Glenbard East was third at 70 points and Naperville Central (59.50) and Naperville North (52.50)  finished 4-5 in the team standings.

“Wheaton Warrenville South has strong balance and they’re young,” Hoff said of the Huskies’ conference foes. “They should be able to dominate for a while in what is a great conference.”

The Tigers closed out the meet by winning the mile relay in a meet record time of 4:06.19, with Glenbard East second at 4:12.26. Naperville North’s quartet of Abby Witmer, Rachel Weathered, Ellie Adochio and Lexley Adesanya took third with a school indoor record time of 4:13.83.

West Aurora, meanwhile, got a big boost from freshman Emma Spagnola, who won two individual events and also helped the Blackhawks’ 4x200 relay win with a meet record time of 1:47.22.

“I don’t really like running indoors because there’s more curves, but things went real well for our team today,” said Spagnola, who took first in the long jump (17-00) and high jump (5-03) and also added a second in the 55-meter hurdles.

“Our freshman was a new nice bright spot,” Blackhawks coach Teresa Towles said. “Not a bad start. We can’t wait to get outdoors.”

For Naperville Central, Jenny Alberts, Kailey Mikulec, Alex Cushing and Hannah Wood ran a 9:32.84 that was faster than the previous DVC indoor record but had to settle for second on Thursday as the Tigers won in 9:29.85. In the 3,200, the Redhawks added another second place as Amanda Fox ran an 11:19.86 behind WW South winner Mikayla Kightlinger (11:17.99).

In the 400 dash, Alberts was second for Central and Adesanya was third for North. The Naperville schools also went 2-3 in the pole vault as Hope Turner was second for the Huskies and Carrie Deveney third for the Redhawks. The Huskies also earned second—place points from Claire Remec who took second to West Aurora’s Jasmine Ranson in the triple jump.
