The Forbes ranking ignored the “cool factor” and focused on choosing a college like a consumer would make any purchase: does the cost of the purchase make sense. The ranking took into account: quality of teaching, career prospects, graduation rates and low levels of debt.

The rankings were prepared for Forbes by the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, a Washington, D.C., think tank founded by Ohio University economist Richard Vedder, according to a news release from North Central College.
