Naperville Resident Among Six North Central College Student Broadcasters Nominated for Silver Dome Awards

Katlyn Thompson of Naperville is among six  student broadcasters nominated for 2011 Student Silver Dome Awards in three categories.

The Student Silver Dome Awards are presented each fall by the Illinois Broadcasters Association to the top college and university radio and TV programs in the state.

A nomination for Best Radio Newscast was earned by the team of Jamie Alt of Sun Prairie, WI, a junior; Whitney Goodbred of Earlville, IL, a junior; Steve Oliveri of Crystal Lake, a 2011 graduate; Thompson, a senior; and Justin Zipser of Glen Ellyn, a 2011 graduate. Also nominated in the category were teams from the University of Illinois and DePaul University.

Kevin Jackman of Glenview, a sophomore, was nominated for Best Radio Live Game Sports. Other nominees represent Eastern Illinois University and DePaul University.

Oliveri also earned a nomination for Best Radio Longform Programming. DePaul also is nominated in the category.

Winners will be announced Sept. 9 at Loyola University Chicago during BA-U2011, IBA’s 10th annual student conference.

The nominated students represent WONC-FM 89.1, a student-run and staffed station. WONC has a station manager and directors of programming, production, promotions, music, news, sports, public affairs and underwriting. Since 1980, Assistant Professor of Broadcast Communication John Madormo has overseen the station’s operations and believes the most important thing for new students, whatever their level of broadcasting experience or interest, is to get involved in the station and on the air as soon as possible. Students who work at the station and choose to major in broadcast communication graduate as all-platform journalists ready to hit the ground running in radio, TV, Internet and social media venues.
