Naperville North Students Arrive for First Day Under the Influence

Those who appeared to be intoxicated were suspended from opening day of school.

The first day of school on its own wasn't exciting enough for some students at Naperville North High School.

A number of students arrived under the influence and appeared intoxicated, according to a story in the Naperville Sun

Some students were suspended and others were being spoken too, according to the district's public information officer Susan Rice, who was quoted in the story.

The district would not say how many students were involved and said that the intoxication incidents did not have anything to do with the campus, according to the story.

The district's disciplinary procedures call for a 10 day external suspension on a first offense, which can be reduced to five days if the student enrolls and completes a chemical dependency assessment, according to the Naperville School District 203 Student Handbook.

District 203 Alcohol, Drugs and Tobacco Disciplinary Procedures
1. Possession/use of alcohol or drugs or being under the influences of alcohol or drugs:
First offense – 10 days external suspension. Reduced to five days if student enrolls and completes a chemical dependency assessment and follows recommendations made by the assessor.
Second offense – 10 days external suspension and recommendation
for expulsion.
2. Possession/use of tobacco or tobacco products:
First offense – Three days external suspension. Reduced to one day if the student enrolls in and completes a tobacco education program.
Second offense – Five days external suspension. Reduced to three days if the student enrolls in and completes a tobacco education program.
Third offense – Ten days external suspension and recommendation for expulsion.
Note: There is also police involvement for students who
are under the age of 18, in accordance with Naperville
City Ordinance.
