The Committee on the American Mathematics Competitions organizes national contests like the AMC 10 and 12 competitions on Feb. 23 in order to recognize and reward student excellence in mathematics.

Each format is a 25-question, 75-minute multiple-choice examination in secondary school mathematics, containing problems that can be understood and solved with pre-calculus concepts. Top scorers in these contests qualify to compete in the American Invitational Mathematics Examination with the possibility of qualifying to compete in the International Mathematics Olympiad.

"The AMC contest is the premier contest for students in these age groups," says Wilders, who is also chair of North Central's science division and the Marie and Bernice Gantzert Professor in the Liberal Arts and Sciences. "Youth who have a knack for and an interest in mathematics really enjoy these types of competitions. Our campus is centrally located to many students in the western suburbs."
