Resolution Refresh – 1st Quarter Run Down

We’re nearing the close of first quarter in 2014, and in the midst of March Madness, doesn’t it seem like an appropriate time for a check-in with those resolutions or goals you set forth at the start of the year? (This is where you nod your head “yes” in positive agreement.) The first part of the year has gone by so quickly. We don’t want it to slip away without taking the time to recognize our successes. Why? Because it’ll help keep your “resolution” FRESH in mind and motivation.

Ok briefly, let’s review. You have your list of goals written out somewhere you can see them, right? Have that out, but set it to the side. Now, below are the questions I asked you to consider when you were looking back at the year 2013. Instead though, apply it to the past (roughly) 90 days. See if you can write out your answers without thinking too long and hard – just jot down your thoughts, taking less than 15 minutes to do so:

  1. What are your top favorite moments or highlights for the last 3 months?
  2. What events impacted you the most?
  3. What did you learn about yourself from the experience(s)?

In writing your thoughts, branch out so you can encompass a broad picture of your life: personal, professional, fitness-oriented, related to your overall health, or maybe about certain relationships. And then remember to use the “S” from our SMART goal blog, and Savor your top moments. Take a look at what you wrote and how it relates back to your goals. Acknowledge what you accomplished or achieved and cheer for yourself! Celebrate even the little victories – and be sure to share with someone who is “on your team” of support that you made forward momentum toward your goal.

What if the things you wrote down don’t happen to be related or necessarily in alignment with your list of goals?

For instance, a mini-goal of mine was related to an accountability challenge with a friend – we both wanted to improve upper body strength, specifically with pull-ups. We were to each complete a set of pull-ups and then text each other on a regular basis for encouragement. Well, with all the snow, and more frequency of shoveling, I went and tweaked my shoulder. Darn it. So, not a “top moment” (#1) for sure, as I postponed the challenge. But my “learning” (#3) was a deeper understanding for this type of shoulder injury.

In another example, my husband and I had certain home projects in mind for this year. But an event that impacted us the most (#2) in the last 90 days, was that in early February we discovered a leak and water damage in our laundry room. That room was not in our plan at all, and as you can imagine, our energy and focus were re-directed to the unexpected project. It caused us to re-evaluate and review the original plans. Despite the alteration of having to let something else go off the list, the “win” and accomplishment was still there. We had the chance to customize the space. Though it wasn’t even on our minds, it really surprised us both (#3) how happy we were that it resulted in a space more suited to our day-to-day needs. It’s turned out to be a “highlight” (#1) in the first quarter!

While the new year isn’t so new anymore, that doesn’t mean you can’t do a Resolution Refresh. Find all the good nuggets in your first 90 days of 2014 and keep cheering yourself on! And while you’re at it, maybe you should mark the calendar for another 90 days and check in with those 3 questions. I’ll bet you’ll have some great wins for the scoreboard.

See you in the studio!
