Benedictine, St. Procopius Abbey mark Vatican II milestone with free lecture

Benedictine University and St. Procopius Abbey are honoring the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council with a free public lecture highlighting the series of reforms that modernized the Roman Catholic Church.

The Very Rev. Robert Barron, S.T.D., president of the University of St. Mary of the Lake in Mundelein, will present “Gaudium et Spes: The Right Reading of Vatican II” at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 24 at St. Procopius Abbey Church, 5601 College Road in Lisle.

Fr. Robert’s lecture will focus specifically on “Joy and Hope: On the Church’s Relation to the Modern World,” one of the 16 documents produced by the Second Vatican Council.

Fr. Robert is an author, speaker, theologian and founder of the global media ministry www.WordOnFire.org. He is also the creator and host of “CATHOLICISM,” a groundbreaking, award-winning documentary series about the Catholic faith. His new documentary, "CATHOLICISM: The New Evangelization," focuses on the challenges the Church faces today, such as the emergence of “the new atheism” and relativistic attitudes toward questions of faith and morality.

Fr. Robert was appointed to the theological faculty of the Mundelein Seminary in 1992, and served as a visiting professor at the University of Notre Dame and the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas. He was twice scholar in residence at the Pontifical North American College at the Vatican.

Fr. Barron grew up in Western Springs and graduated from Benet Academy in 1978. He earned a master's degree in philosophy from the Catholic University of America in 1982 and a doctorate in sacred theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris in 1992.

Heralded by Cardinal Francis George, O.M.T., as “one of the Church’s best messengers” as a national media source on Catholic issues, Fr. Barron has been an Archdiocese of Chicago priest for the past 27 years.
Fr. Barron serves as an on-air contributor and analyst for NBC News in New York and is a frequent commentator for The Chicago Tribune, FOX News, CNN, EWTN, Our Sunday Visitor, The Catholic Herald and the Catholic News Agency.

He has published numerous books, essays and DVDs, including “The Strangest Way: Walking the Christian Path,” “Creation as Discipleship,” “A Study of the De Potentia of Thomas Aquinas in Light of the Dogmatik of Paul Tillich,” “Bridging the Great Divide” and “Word on Fire: Proclaiming the Power of Christ.” His articles on theology and the spiritual life appear frequently online and in numerous journals.
