What's That Sound? Tornado Sirens Undergoing Maintenance This Week

Outdoor warning sirens will be tested throughout the week in Naperville, beginning Monday, Oct. 7.

The city of Naperville is informing residents that annual maintenance on the city’s 25 outdoor warning sirens will take place throughout the week of Oct. 7 through 11.

During this time, the city’s warning siren contractor Braniff will activate each of the city’s outdoor warning sirens individually for evaluation. Residents should not be alarmed if they hear the sirens going off during periods of calm weather. Audible testing each day will only take place between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. The city anticipates the routine maintenance to be complete by Oct. 11.

“This annual maintenance is important to ensure the City’s outdoor warning sirens function properly at critical moments,” Emergency Management Coordinator Dan Nelson said in a press release. “This year’s scope of work includes maintenance to ensure that each siren’s radio, which both receives commands and reports the siren’s status to public safety personnel continuously, is working properly.”
