Route 59 Construction Halted Through Thanksgiving Weekend

Commuters who travel along Route 59 may get a sliver of relief this Thanksgiving.

IDOT contractors working on the Route 59 expansion project will halt work beginning the evening of Wednesday, Nov. 27 for the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. All existing traffic lanes will be open along Route 59 and the intersecting roadways through Monday, December 2 pending weather and unforeseen circumstances, according to the city of Naperville.

Beginning the week of Dec. 2, a new long-term lane configuration will be implemented on Route 59 from Interstate 88 to North Aurora. As part of the configuration, all northbound and southbound traffic will be moved to the west side of the road between Interstate 88 and Brookdale Road/Bruce Lane and to the east side of the road between Brookdale Road/Bruce Lane and North Aurora Road.  Two lanes will be provided in each direction and a left turn lane will be provided at signalized intersections, according to the city.

In addition, new long-term lane configurations will also be implemented along North Aurora Road and Diehl Road within the project limits. All eastbound and westbound traffic will be shifted to the south side of North Aurora Road and the north side of Diehl Road. Two lanes of traffic will remain open in each direction with turn lanes at intersecting roadways whenever possible, according to the city.

Lane closures of shorter duration are expected to continue as needed at the Interstate 88 interchange and south of North Aurora Road, as well as along the remaining intersecting roadways within the project limits.

The project limits include Ferry Road to Aurora Avenue/New York Street as well as improvements to the major intersections within that three-mile corridor, including Diehl Road, North Aurora Road and Aurora Avenue/New York Street. Construction began in August 2013 is expected to be complete in 2015, according to the city.
