Naperville Police to Close Downtown Streets at Bar Time

The temporarily closure is planned for a portion of Jackson and Jefferson avenues over the summer, according to media reports.

Naperville police will close a one-blcok section of Jefferson and Jackson avenues between Washginton and Main around bar close this summer to find out if it helps improve pedestrian safety or if it just backs up traffic in the downtown, according to the Daily Herald.

Police Chief Robert Marshall said the hope is to find out if temporarily closing roads is in the best interest "of public safety during high activity periods," and the police department plans on re-opening the streets if it causes traffic issues, according to the article.

Maybe drivers and pedestrians need to pay more attention! If you're texting/talking on your phone while walking that's your fault if you get ran over!

I really LOVE the idea of turning Jefferson (between Washington and Main) into a pedestrian mall with bistro tables over the summer weekends....I'll bet the stores and eateries along that stretch will prosper! On Jefferson in that block, there is already "traffic calming" and not many parking spaces....start with this block...Not as sure about closing-off Jackson....

ps: Don't just close the streets at 2am (or whenever the bars close)....That's totally counter-intuitive.

I would even consider permanently closing off Jefferson Street between Washington and Main. They could turn that area into a real promenade.
