Naperville Park District Awarded $2.5 Million Grant for Future Activity Center

Submitted by the Naperville Park District

Governor Pat Quinn announced on July 7 the awarding of $7 million for the FY 2014 Park and Recreation Construction (PARC) grants in Naperville, Aurora and West Chicago, which included a $2.5 million grant for the Naperville Park District for development of the District’s planned Activity Center.

“This grant will help fund the development of the District’s first indoor Activity Center,” said Executive Director Ray McGury. “The center will provide year-round active recreation space as a one-stop shop for families, children, adults, teens and seniors where they can recreate together or enjoy different activities under the same roof.”

Director McGury and Park Board President Mike Reilly attended the Governor’s press conference in Aurora, IL on Monday, July 7.

In a July 7 press release Governor Quinn commented, “It’s important that everyone in Illinois has a place to be active and take on a healthy lifestyle. These investments will give the Aurora, Naperville and West Chicago communities new facilities to be enjoyed for years to come. These projects will help improve the health of the people of Illinois and create new jobs for hardworking local residents.”

Key community needs driving the planning of an activity center include the need for accessible year-round recreation for health and wellness, the lack of indoor space for seniors and the special needs community, and the need for active recreation opportunities for families, teens and the increasingly diverse cultures within Naperville.

The new Activity Center will be located at 1760 Quincy Ave. in Naperville.   Project information and conceptual plans for the facility may be viewed at http://www.napervilleparks.org/activitycenter.
