Starting the evening of Sunday, June 24, motorists traveling on Washington Street will experience lane reductions between 5th Avenue and Franklin Avenue due to watermain and electric duct bank work occurring in that area, weather permitting. Work in this area will continue for approximately one week.
Work on this project, which will provide increased reliability of the city’s water system, will take place primarily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. However, night work is also anticipated to occur on Washington Street at North Avenue. This work will take place between the hours of 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. starting on June 24 and continuing through the morning of June 27, based on weather and subsurface conditions encountered. During night work, traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers present to route traffic appropriately. Please note that traffic could be stopped for as long as 10 minutes to allow the opposing lane through the construction zone.
The pedestrian approaches at the northeast corner of North Avenue and Washington Street will be reconstructed during this time to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. A pedestrian detour route will be established and signage will be utilized to direct pedestrians appropriately.
The city strongly encourages motorists to utilize alternate routes and allow extra time to get to their destination while construction work is ongoing. Suggested alternate north/south routes include Mill Street and Loomis Street.
As with any construction project, the city would like to remind motorists to stay alert, use caution and abide by all traffic regulations when driving through construction zones. For safe driving tips in construction zones, visit www.naperville.il.us/constructionsafety.aspx.
