When customers voluntarily reduce electric usage, the City minimizes its monthly costs associated with purchasing electricity to meet the needs of its customers. Part of the City’s cost when purchasing electricity is based on the peak electric usage figure.

Any cost savings experienced by the City can be passed through to customers in the form of lower rates. The City anticipates that due totomorrow’s high temperatures, July’s highest electric demand from customers will be experienced during the aforementioned 3 to 7 p.m. timeframe.

Below are some tips to help reduce your energy consumption, if you so choose:

  • If health permits, set your air conditioner at 78 degrees or higher. Keep shades, blinds and curtains closed to help keep your home cool and make sure doors to the outside, garage or attic are firmly closed to help keep cool air in and hot air out.
  • Use major appliances such as washing machines, dryers or dishwashers before or after the 3 to 7 p.m. timeframe.
  • Turn off and refrain from using all unnecessary lighting and electrical equipment. Some examples could include computers, swimming pool filters, hair dryers and vacuum cleaners, depending on your circumstances.
  • Consider cooking outside on a grill to avoid turning on the oven or stove.

The City’s electric utility does not anticipate any issues with an electric shortage on July 22; this voluntary measure is for cost-saving purposes. Please keep the health and safety needs of your family and pets in mind when choosing whether to conserve your electricity usage.
