Woman Chasing After Dog Seriously Injured in Accident

Police continue to investigate the accident, which took place at about 8:18 p.m. Sunday in the 1400 block of East Chicago Avenue.

A woman who was walking her dog was seriously injured Sunday night after she attempted to retrieve the dog as it ran into the street, according to police.

The said that at about 8:18 p.m. police and fire crews responded to the area near the 1400 block of East Chicago Avenue for the report of a vehicle and pedestrian accident.

The pedestrian, Ashley Wehr, 24, of the 6 South 500 Block of Naper Boulevard, was seriously injured in the accident and taken to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Sgt. Martin Lee, of the Naperville Police Department said in a news release issued overnight. The dog did not survive the accident.

After an investigation, police determined that Wehr was walking with her dog on the north side of Chicago Avenue when she attempted to retrieve the dog, which had run into the street. The driver of a 2008 Buick Enclave that was traveling westbound on Chicago Avenue in the left lane struck Wehr as she entered the street.

George Switalski, 86, of Naperville was driving the vehicle, police said. He was not injured in the accident.
