A 16-year-old boy died Monday after a broad-daylight shooting in Joliet Township, Will County Sheriff's police confirmed.

The Will County Coroner's office identified the teen as Robert J. Garcia, of Joliet. Garcia sustained multiple gunshot wounds, according to the coroner.

Will County Deputy Chief Ken Kaupas said the teen was shot at around 1:40 p.m. in the 400 block of Algonquin Street.

Garcia was taken to Silver Cross Hospital in New Lenox, Kaupas said. He was pronounced dead in the Silver Cross emergency room at 2:15 p.m., according to the coroner's office.

Kaupas said Garcia did not live at the address where he was shot.

Asked whether the incident may have been gang related, Kaupas said it was too early to say what the possible motive may have been. So far, no one has been taken into custody in connection with the shooting, police said late Monday afternoon.

Kaupas said a vehicle was involved in the shooting. A description of the car was not immediately available Monday afternoon.

The shooting is only the latest incident of gun violence in the area in recent weeks.

Last week, a 28-year-old man was shot in the chest in what police described as a gang-related shooting on Second Avenue in Joliet.

Earlier this month, a 15-year-old boy was shot in the right thighin a drive-by shooting near Third Avenue and Sherman Street.
