15-Year-Old Dies After Romeoville Shooting

The teen and her mother were shot as they sat in their car Thursday morning.

A 15-year-old girl has died following a Thursday morning shooting in Romeoville, according to the Chicago Sun-Times, and the ex-boyfriend accused in the crime is being held on $5 million bond.

The girl, identified as Briana Valle, reportedly died Saturday afternoon at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

The teenager, a Romeoville High School student, was shot twice in the head early Thursday as she and her mother sat in a car in their driveway in the 300 block of Emery Avenue, police said. The girl's mother, 33, was shot once in the neck, according to police.

On Friday, Romeoville Chief Mark Turvey said the girl's mother was in good condition at Loyola University Medical Center. Both victims were initially taken to Adventist Bolingbrook Hospital, but later transported to Loyola, according to police.

Accused gunman Erick Maya, 23, of Cicero, remains at the Will County jail on $5 million bond. Maya is charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm and one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.

Turvey said Maya had previously dated the teen. Will County court records show that an emergency order of protection was taken out against Maya in December 2013.

Turvey said the order is related to the shooting case, but declined to release details or say whether police had responded to previous domestic violence reports involving Maya.

Maya is due back in court Tuesday, according to Will County records.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family of the teen and her mother.
