Police: Three Naperville Gas Stations Fail Tobacco Compliance Checks

Clerks at three Naperville gas stations received citations after police say they sold tobacco to a minor during recent compliance checks.

The clerks who police said sold cigarettes to the minor were issued a city ordinance citation for selling tobacco to a person under the age of 18:

  • Speedway, 631 N. Route 59
  • Chi City Tobacco, 1224 W. Ogden #E
  • BP Amoco, 4940 S. Route 59

The Naperville Police Department completed the second round of tobacco compliance checks in Naperville over the last two weeks of January. Over 70 establishments were checked during the checks, according to a Naperville Police Department news release.

The compliance checks are performed to determine if local tobacco retailers are complying with the minimum-age tobacco laws which prohibit the sale of tobacco to persons under the age of 18.

A grant awarded by the Illinois Liquor Control Commission’s “Kids Can’t Buy ‘Em Here” Tobacco Enforcement Program allows the Naperville Police to educate local tobacco retailers on minimum-age tobacco laws and the importance of verifying the age of customers before selling age-restrictive products such as tobacco.
