A Shorewood man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and driving too fast for conditions, after police said he drove his car into a billboard post and fence early Tuesday morning.
and responded to the 500 block of Chamberlain Avenue after someone called 911 to report a vehicle had driven into a structure just before 1 a.m. Tuesday.
When emergency personnel arrived, they found an orange 2008 Dodge Charger in a yard off the roadway. Dean A. Suominen, 36, of 513 Ca Crest Drive in Shorewood, was trapped inside the vehicle, had to be extricated and was taken to Edward Hospital, where he remained as of early Tuesday afternoon.
The initial investigation suggests that Suominen was driving east on Ogden Avenue near the intersection with Rickert Drive, when his car left the road. Police said the car hit several curbs and lost contact with the ground twice, before rolling over, running into a billboard post and fence, and eventually stopping in a yard.
During the accident, the car's engine became dislodged and traveled into a nearby parking lot, along with a tire from Suominen's vehicle, which hit and damaged the passenger-side door of an unoccupied 2001 Audi parked in that lot, according to reports.
Suominen was the only person in his vehicle at the time of the accident.
Police said excessive speed and alcohol played a role in the crash. Members of Naperville Police Department's Traffic Unit responded to the scene early Tuesday to work on accident reconstruction and are continuing to investigate further.
