Police: One Hurt in Late-Night Plainfield Shooting

Plainfield police are investigating a home invasion that left one man shot early Tuesday morning. 

Det. Sgt. Kevin McQuaid said the victim, a 19-year-old male, was shot in the upper chest area after pursuing three suspects who had entered an apartment in the 24000 block of Main Street.

McQuaid said the victim's arm was also hurt in the altercation, but his injuries were not life threatening. 

Two of the three suspects were wearing masks when the men entered the apartment around 1 a.m. Tuesday. A struggle with the six occupants of the apartment — five females and a male in their late teens and early 20s — ensued, McQuaid said. 

Two of the suspects were also toting guns, described as a shotgun and a semiautomatic handgun, according to police. McQuaid said police believe the victim was shot with the handgun when he chased the suspects as they fled the apartment.

It's still unclear whether the shooter was wearing a mask, and police are working to verify a description of a vehicle believed to have been used to by the suspects as they left the scene, McQuaid said. In a press release, police said witnesses described the vehicle as a green SUV.

Given the foggy conditions late Monday night and early Tuesday morning, "We're still looking to see which vehicle was used," McQuaid said. 

Police are also investigating whether the incident was gang related, according to McQuaid. 

He said Plainfield police are expected to release additional information on the incident Tuesday afternoon.

One person was shot in the struggle that ensued after three men entered an apartment in the 24000 block of West Main Street in search of drugs and money, police said.

responded to a report of the shooting at 1:14 a.m. Tuesday. Witnesses said two of the men were wearing masks when they entered the apartment, demanding drugs and cash, according to police.

Two of the suspects were also carrying weapons, described as a semiautomatic handgun and a shotgun, police said.

According to police, a struggle ensued between the three suspects and the six occupants of the apartment. The three men then fled the apartment.

The victim was pursuing the suspects when he became involved in another struggle with one of the offenders in the vestibule of the building, Plainfield police said in a release issued Tuesday morning.

The victim was shot once during the struggle and was transported to Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. Police said the victim is listed in stable condition and the injury is not expected to be life threatening.

All three offenders fled the scene in a red SUV, according to witnesses. Police described the shooter as a 5-foot-8 Hispanic male between the ages of 18 and 25, weighing 170 pounds.
