Police Charge Man With Seven Local Burglaries After Finding Him With Rock

Naperville police said they arrested a 30-year-old Clarendon Hills man early Friday.

had a man in custody Friday afternoon who they believe may be responsible for as many as 10 burglaries at local businesses during the past week.

Michael J. Carvell, 30, whose last known address was in the 500 block of Alabama Street in Clarendon Hills, was arrested around 1:15 a.m. Friday after police said they found him holding a large rock near a business in the 1500 block of West Ogden Avenue. Police said an investigation led to Carvell being charged with seven counts of burglary, each a Class 2 felony, and one count of attempted burglary, a Class 3 felony.

"Between Sunday, March 27 and Thursday, March 31, the received ten reports of forcible commercial burglaries at various businesses along 75th Street and one on North Route 59," stated a news release from the department. "All of the burglaries were similar in the fact that the offender(s) used an object to shatter store front glass."

The , which are both in the 900 block of West 75th Street. Police said cash was targeted in each of the 10 crimes, which all occurred in the late evening or early morning. Naperville Police Sgt. Gregg Bell said he was unsure how much money Carvell had stolen, in total, from the businesses.

"When they found him last night—and they were waiting for him—it was near an automobile dealership on Ogden Avenue," Bell said. "He was walking around looking at all of the businesses."

Carvell was found when the department "launched an intensive investigation that included the reassignment of investigative personnel and saturated patrols at suspected target locations," according to police.

He remained in custody around 2 p.m. at the Naperville Police Department, pending transfer to the DuPage County Jail. Bell said there's a "good probability" additional charges could be filed.

Class 2 felonies are punishable by up to seven years in prison and Class 3 felonies are punishable by up to five years.

The department is coordinating an ongoing investigation with authorities from several jurisdictions that have recently experienced similar commercial burglaries.
