Plainfield Teen Killed While Walking on I-55 Near Shorewood

The driver stopped after hitting the teen, police said, and was not charged in connection with the fatal accident.

A Plainfield teen was hit by a car and killed while walking along Interstate 55 near Shorewood Sunday morning.

The 16-year-old was walking along the northbound lanes by the Jefferson Street exit when he was struck shortly before 2 a.m., according to the Illinois State Police.

The teen was pronounced dead where he was found about 3 a.m., the Will County Coroner's Office said in a press release. The youth's identity was being withheld pending positive identification. An autopsy was scheduled for Monday.

The driver who hit the teen stopped after the impact, police said. The driver, who was behind the wheel of a passenger car, was not charged in connection with the fatal accident but the investigation of the incident remained active late Sunday morning, police said.

The teen was the second Plainfield resident killed while walking on I-55 in less than two years. Ryan Knudsen, 22, was struck near the Route 30 exit in October 2012.

A Freightliner semi-tractor-trailer hit Knudsen and a 1999 Toyota Camry following the truck struck him a second time.
